J. A. Campbell collection

The J. A. Campbell collection consists of correspondence, speeches, a photo-catalogue, reports, four scrapbooks and ephemera. The correspondence includes personal (1918 – 1919), The Pas Board of Trade (1917 – 1944), various Rotary Clubs (Estevan, Banff, Kenora, Prince Albert, etc. 1934 – 1940), the 1921 election, Hudson Bay Railway (1920 – 1928), correspondence with several newspapers including the Winnipeg Tribune (1926 – 1928), etc. Speeches written and delivered by J. A. Campbell in various venues (1920s – 1940s) range in topic from politics to resources in the North and the importance and significance of the Hudson Bay Railway. Reports compiled since 1886 – 1958 on The Hudson Bay Railway Route (1886 – 1924), mining of natural resources in Northern Manitoba (1917 – 1924) and reports on The Pas (1958).The photo-catalogue contains descriptions/titles for photographs from 1916 – 1923, 25 pages. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings about the Hudson Bay Railway from 1923 – 1924.

Reader family collection

The Reader family collection consists of two pen and ink drawings of The Pas and Devon Mission, Oonikup Cumberland House, Moose Lake Grand Rapids, done circa 1895 (possibly by Dunlop); applications to purchase land in The Pas, and a sheet of instructions from Sam Waller to Phil Reader on how to clean skulls.

R. H. Bagshaw fonds

The R. H. Bagshaw fonds consists of R. H. Bagshaw’s diary from 1907 – 1908, typewritten excerpts from his diary, and the envelope that contained the diary for transport at some point in 1940.

Town of The Pas fonds

The fonds consists of the administrative and operational records of the Town of The Pas from its incorporation in 1912 to the most recently accessioned town records from 1999 (a few maps are from 1909). Administrative and operational records include financial records, town council records, minutes, by-laws, ledgers, reports, correspondence, planning records, agreements, court records, departmental records, library records, planning records for commemorative anniversaries, receipts, Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) records, maps and plans. The Town of The Pas records contain a nearly complete set of documents which are mandated for permanent retention according to the Retention and Disposition of Municipal Records regulation, under the Municipal Act. In addition, some other non-mandated records have been retained because of their inherent, historical, or other interest.

Maps and Plans

Series consists of town and road maps from 1909 – [before 1992] including plans for various town areas and projects, diesel generator plans from 1914 – [before 1992], cemetery plans from 1963 – [before 1992], insurance plans from 1929 – 1951, and miscellaneous maps from 1933 – 1956.

Sub-series consists of various plans such as for subdivisions, townships, public roads, river lots, Willingdon Park, the Pasquia Land Settlement Project, the Big Eddy Settlement, the Umfreville Lots, and The Pas Cemetery.

Ephemera

This series contains large quantities of ephemera collected, created and compiled by Sam Waller thorough out his life and travels. This includes certificates, brochures for travel, places of previous residence, sheet music, scrapbooks, and a very large collection of religious pamphlets (569 including more than a few duplicates) covering topics from basic principle of Christianity, notes on cathedrals, to how to cope with gambling, Residential Schools, different religions (Judaism, Jehovah’s Witness, Islam, Catholicism and Anglicanism), as well as a few pamphlets in Cree syllabic.

This sub-series consists of several certificates earned by Sam Waller, including a confirmation certificate, a certificate from Khaki University and two Lay Reader certificates. This sub series also contains a letter from King George, which was received by Mr. Waller upon his discharge from the Army in 1919.

Tax Rolls

Sub-series consists of collectors’ rolls from 1912 – 1959 that identify property values, tax rates, and other relevant information for collecting taxes. Also includes collectors’ rolls for The Pas School District from 1932 – 1937, business tax rolls from 1923, 1931 and 1933, tax rolls from 1967 – 1971 and municipal tax rolls from 1982 – 1988.
