This folder contains session minutes from the United Church General Council, 41 newspaper and magazine articles written by and about Lockhart, two bulletins, five pieces of correspondence, two Moderator’s Addresses, one sermon and one nomination speech. These documents pertain to Lockhart’s nomination for the position of Moderator, time as Moderator and his successor.

The first page of this scrapbook reads “Letters of Congratulation from Personal Friends received by Wilfred C. Lockhart (on the occasion of his election as Moderator of the United Church of Canada…in 1966).” Within the scrapbook Lockhart has arranged more than 125 letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings and greeting cards in alphabetical order according to the sender’s last name. Included are three invitations to government functions pertaining to Canada’s centennial year and a program from the celebrations, in which Lockhart and other ministers presided over a special worship service. No documents were added or removed when order was imposed.

This folder contains five working papers and reports on aspects of higher learning, 19 meeting minutes and agendas, 12 meeting notices, a list of resolutions and 7 pieces of correspondence (primary correspondents A. S. Leach and G. M. Davies) pertaining to the status of various Colleges in Manitoba in relation to both the University of Manitoba and universities in Canada generally.

Monnin, and George Johnson) and five reports and working papers regarding the workings of the Council on Higher Learning and the status of Manitoba’s colleges in relation to Canada’s Universities.

This folder contains documents relating to the Council on Higher Learning in 1968 and 1969, as well as related undated documents. The dated items consist largely of correspondence (primary correspondents included H. H. Saunderson and A. S. Leach). The undated portion contains two invitations, two pieces of correspondence, many handwritten notes taken throughout the 1960s, two meeting minutes, two notices of meetings, two copies of a list of Council members, two copies of a list of Council Organization and Terms of Reference and two reports.

Personal Correspondence 1968 – 1979

This folder contains approximately 89 written and 43 typed letters, 15 greeting cards and three telegrams from acquaintances and educational or church figures to Lockhart. Letters from many departments and boards of the United Church are included, and a variety of United Church congregations (particularly those located in Manitoba and Ontario) are represented. Included are 63 written and 26 typed letters, 12 cards and two telegrams sent to Lockhart during his time of illness in 1968.

University of Winnipeg: Post-Lockhart

This folder contains documents relating to the University of Winnipeg after Lockhart resigned at President. It includes six programs, two speech transcripts, two newspaper articles, correspondence (primary correspondent Jack Brown), two editions of “University of Winnipeg Inside Info,” pension and tax documents (including correspondence with J. L. Porter) and documents relating to the Alumni Association (including correspondence from Eilleen Burrows and Robin Farquhar).

Scrapbook, White

This scrapbook contains letters and greeting cards of condolence sent to Lockhart on the occasion of his first wife’s death. These letters come from family friends (including Keith Muir and Carl Ridd), United Church ministers, moderators, and congregations (including moderator Robert Smith, Rev. Dr. L. George LeDrew, Norway Point Community Church, and W. R. Davies) and others (mayor of Etobicoke and the staff of Palace Pier). Four newspaper clippings, two photographs, a form response letter from Lockhart, a “Book of Memories,” and Eileen’s certificate of membership in the University Women’s club (issued 1971) are also included. No documents were added or removed when order was imposed.

Biographical Documents

This folder contains three newspaper articles, two obituaries (and one draft of an obituary), one speech regarding retiring presbytery members and one speech from a memorial service that treat Lockhart’s life in a biographical manner. Most documents were written either after Lockhart's retirement from the University of Winnipeg or after his death. Also included is a brief write-up detailing the lives of Lockhart’s parents.

Writing Projects

This series consists of three lengthy writing projects of Lockhart. One of these is his autobiography, two drafts of which are in the collection. The second is his published history of the Norway Point church. The third is a draft of a document entitled “Transition from College to University.”
