City of Brandon Collection

The collection is made up of material accumulated by the City of Brandon and pertains primarily to the city's infrastructure. The majority of the collection consists of photographs. Also included are prints, one painting, and drawings. There are photographs of businesses, city streets, significant buildings, parks, sports teams, and important people. Significant buildings include hotels, stores, schools, the old City Hall, the fire hall, and the Court House. Important individuals in these photographs include mayors of Brandon, members of the British Royal family, and multiple Governor Generals of Canada. There are also photographs of groups such as the fire department, the police department, city councils, and other citizen organizations. Along with the photographs there is a disc containing digital copies for the pictures of Brandon's mayors. There are a number of framed documents included in this collection. These include certificates, proclamations, and awards of merit presented to the City of Brandon. Also found in this collection are two guest books from Manitoba's Centennial celebration, city plaques, and sketches for city planning. There is one commemorative dish held in a frame, picturing the old city hall and opera house. Each item in the collection in described in further detail at the individual level.

The collection contains a short memoir written by Mrs. Eliza Durston and two photographs -- one of a Brandon baseball team and the other of Brandon’s first water merchant.

Isabelle Heeney Collection

The collection contains material collected by Isabelle Heeney (1902-1996). The majority of the collection is comprised of written texts about Manitoba history. These texts include books about the history of Elton and Carberry Plains; Brandon teacher's strike of 1922; history of the Anglican Church in Brandon; and Manitoba's architectural heritage. There is also a cookbook from 1909 and five issues of a literary magazine published for Brandon Collegiate in the early 1900s. Other items in the collection include a Loyal Orange Lodge membership certificate from 1911, and a photograph of a bride c.1890.

J.T. McGregor Collection

The material in this collection consists primarily of photographs pertaining to the McGregor family and to farming activities in the R.M. of Elton. The collection includes photographic portraits of Archie, William, and Sarah Taylor McGregor and a sketched portrait of Grant McEwan. Other photographs include the McGregor Bros., Alex Anderson, and Chalmer Bros. threshing outfits, as well as the farms of J.T. Clark, Robert Reid, Pierce Couling, John William Sandison, and William Dope. The only textual material in the collection is a biography of John William Sandison, written by J.T. McGregor.

Assiniboine Historical Society Collection

The fonds consists of records collected and created by the Assiniboine Historical Society over the course of its existence. The records include photographs and other historical documents from the Brandon area; meeting minutes; financial records; correspondence records; heritage publications; film committee and street name committee documents; a constitution; documents relating to the Manitoba Historical Society; walking tour documents; and some miscellaneous files. The Laurie V. Smith Collection contains the financial records of the Church of St. Mary The Virgin Sunday School (1923-1947), the personal journals and financial records of Nicholas John King from 1896-1911, the minute book from the Roseville Cross and Crown Circle of King's Daughters (1896-1910) and a framed United Nations Youth Seminar Dedication Roll (1959)

William H.K. Wilton Collection

The collection consists of certificates and a photograph pertaining to the activities of Mayor William K. "Bill" Wilton between 1970 and 1975. The certificates awarded to Mayor Wilton include Honorary Citizen of Tucson, Arizona; others originate from Regina Buffalo Days, City of Portage La Prairie Winter Fun Festival, and Knights of Columbus. The photograph shows Mayor Wilton opening the Royal Bank of Canada branch at 8th Street and Rosser Avenue in Brandon, Manitoba.

Birtles Family Collection

The collection contains family photographs and textual documents related to the activities of members of the John Birtles (1886-1977) family. The collection includes portraits of family members, postcards, newspaper clippings, certificates, a letter, magazines and books.

Kenner Collection

The collection consists of Kenner family photographs and photographs depicting business and farming activities of John Howard Kenner (1870-1965) at Melita, Manitoba. The fonds also consists of photographs of Pierson General Store owned by William Staples Kenner (1863-1952) in Pierson, Manitoba. There are also photographs of Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing graduates Anna Catherine (McLaren) Kenner (1873-1965) and Miss Christina Macleod (1883-1976). Additionally, the collection contains the 1906 register from the Palace Hotel in Brandon, Catherine Kenner's in the Brandon General Hospital Alumni Association membership certificate, and a meal ticket from the Carleton Cafe in Brandon.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of material collected by Martin Kavanagh pertaining to the history of Manitoba. The majority of the textual documents are newspaper clippings from local newspapers. From where he obtained the photographs is unknown. The content of the fond pertains to the city of Brandon’s early history. The fond contains newspaper clippings about the city’s prominent members, clubs, events, schools, and businesses. It contains photographs of prominent building such as hotels, and other important businesses. The photographs document many areas of life in early Brandon including businesses, industry, agriculture, transportation, and education.
