David Silberberg fonds

Fonds consists of personal photographs and home videos of David Silverberg as well as records he collected about Judaism and the Winnipeg Jewish community.

Photographs and home movies depict friends and family of David Silverberg at home, on vacation and at public events as well as sites in and around Winnipeg.

Two volumes consist of records “Of Jewish Interest” collected by David Silverberg. These include brochures, invitations, newspaper clippings and other records related to religious and secular Jewish topics in Winnipeg and elsewhere as well as commentaries on some of these written by Silberberg. Organizations represented in these records include Shaarey Zedek, Winnipeg Jewish Community Council, Jewish Welfare Fund and Hebrew Sick Benefit Association.

Hadassah-Wizo Council of Winnipeg fonds

Fonds consists of publicity materials, publications, administrative and other records of the Hadassah-Wizo Council of Winnipeg. These records include meeting minutes, scrapbooks, photographs and newsletters.

Publications include the “Happenings” newsletter, cookbooks, annual reports and directories of Jewish businesses. This includes publications of the Winnipeg Council, the Western Region and Canadian head office.

Administrative records include minute books, correspondence, financial statements and membership lists. Correspondence involves regional and national offices, members and financial recipients in Canada and Israel.

Scrapbooks were compiled for each of the Council presidents who held office between 1966 and 1988 outlining the achievements of the council during their tenures. The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, invitations, brochures and other records.

Photographs depict various fundraising events, such as bazaars and fashion shows as well as the results achieved by funding recipients in Canada and Israel.

Fonds consists of records of the Talmud Torah-Joseph Wolinsky Parent-Teacher Association including meeting minutes and scrapbooks.

Minutes of Parent Teacher Association meetings discuss fundraising events, school events, curriculum, facilities and staffing among other issues. Also included are some minutes of the school’s executive board. Other administrative records include membership lists, annual reports and the organizations constitution.

The scrapbooks were compiled by members of the association and document events and activities at the schools and of the association. Records include programs, correspondence, newspaper clippings and Annual General Meeting reports.

Morris A. Gray fonds

Fonds consists of scrapbooks of newspaper articles documenting the political career of Morris A. Gray as well as two volumes on other subjects. The scrapbooks are organized by year and document all mentions of Gray during elections and during his positions in government as well as his involvement with various Jewish organizations in Winnipeg.

One additional publication is on the subject of Jewish settlement in British Mandate Palestine. An additional volume was produced by Canadian National Railways documenting the activities of Jewish farmers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including pictures of the people involved and their farms.

Orenstein family fonds

Fonds consists of scrapbooks, newspaper clippings and other records about the Orenstein family.

Newspaper clippings document family events such as births, bar mitzvahs, marriages, deaths, sporting events and participation in public events. Other clippings relate to boxing matches not involving family members.

Other records include greeting cards sent between family members, telegrams of congratulation on the birth of children, photographs and certificates. Also includes programs for organizations of interest to the family including the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada and the Negev Dinner.

Irma Penn fonds

Fonds consists of records of Irma Penn reflecting her art, education, volunteer work, genealogical research and her husband’s service during the Spanish Civil War.

Records include scrapbooks documenting her art and her volunteer work through newspaper clippings, photographs and ephemera.

Penn’s educational career is reflected in diplomas, her Bachelor of Education thesis and educational software that she programmed.

Fonds also includes examples of her art and poetry and a movie about her creation of a Torah scroll.

Genealogical research includes family histories of both the Epp and Penn families.

Also included is the war diary of her husband Marvin among other records of his military service.

Sybil and Saul Cherniack fonds

Fonds consists of scrapbooks compiled by Saul and Sybil Cherniack documenting Saul Cherniack’s political career as well as their personal lives in addition to other records. Other records include photographs of Sybil Cheriack’s family, and records documenting Saul’s work with various Jewish organizations in Winnipeg.

The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings that mention Saul Cherniack during his political career as well as campaign material and other political ephemera. They appear to have been assembled by Sybil Cherniack.

Other records relate to Saul’s work with Jewish organizations including the Canadian Jewish Congress, I.L. Peretz School and the Jewish Welfare Fund.

Later records mostly consist of photographs, correspondence and other records related to Saul and Sybil’s personal and family life. Also include are photographs of Sybil’s relatives in the Zeal and Litman families of Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan.
