Nadine Boulay fonds

This fonds consists of material relating to Nadine Boulay’s honours thesis in Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Manitoba. Boulay examined the ways fellow WGS students identified in terms of gender and sexuality. The fonds includes institutional information about the WGS programs at the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg; Boulay’s notes regarding outreach to fellow students for interviews; her thesis proposal and explanation of research methods; ethics review; audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with her subjects; a draft of her thesis; and the final copy of her honours thesis.

The fonds was arranged in part by the transferring agent and divided into series and folders based on his own determinations and specifications. The fonds is divided into two series, the first, New Horizon Research Foundation, is a collection of articles written under the auspices of the New Horizon Research Foundation by Dr. Owen (usually with Mrs. Owen) and other New Horizon members between 1975 and 1994 as well as a bound collection of “New Horizons: Journal of the New Horizons Research Foundation” that ran from 1972-1978 . The second series, occasional papers, contains other articles written by or about the Owens, their correspondences, other related articles that they had collected, photographs, sketches and a DVD containing digitized copies of some of the items. In addition, the fonds also contains a VHS and DVD copy of a table tilting session.

The fonds consists primarily of photocopies of articles, documents, correspondence, photographs or artwork that the donor has acquired from various magazines, newspapers, books, associates and other archives and libraries. The vast majority of the collection relates to “Lost Horizon”, with a much smaller, though still significant, percentage relating to "Helen of Troy". Some of the collection falls outside the scope of either of the two aforementioned movies, being a collection of writings, photos and artwork relating to Hollywood and the movie industry in general, as well as California travel information and info on Tibet. The fonds is divided into the series “Lost Horizon” articles, “Lost Horizon” documents and research, personal effects, "Lost Horizon” publicity stills, “Lost Horizon” production photographs, “Lost Horizon” negatives, “Lost Horizon” art, “Helen of Troy”, related interests, oversized items, "Lost Horizon" microfilm, correspondence about “Lost Horizon”, “Lost Horizon” biographies, oversized photos of “Lost Horizon,” video collection associated with “Lost Horizon,” and audio cassette collection associated with “Lost Horizon”.

The "Lost Horizon" articles series contains newspaper, magazine and journal articles, as well as book excerpts, related to various "Lost Horizon" subjects, such as production, reception and cast and crew biographies. The "Lost Horizon" various articles series also features articles discussing James Hilton's other works. The “Lost Horizon” documents and research series contains various primary sources such as interviews, scripts, theatre programs and legal documents. The personal effects series contains content related to Ely Bronstein’s personal life such as correspondence and ephemera, though the vast majority of this material relates to “Lost Horizon”. The video collection associated with “Lost Horizon” series contains films based on other works by James Hilton or starring Ronald Colman, as well as information on Frank Capra’s life and his American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. The audio cassette collection associated with “Lost Horizon” series contains various primary sources such as interviews, theatre programs, soundtracks, prayers, and news reports. The next three series contain photographs of “Lost Horizon”, both publicity stills - scenes from the movie -slides, and production photos – pictures taken of the production processes or of members of the production crew. The negatives relating to “Lost Horizon” are reproduced photographic negatives, while the artwork contains movie posters and concept art. The “Helen of Troy” series contains material relating to that film, including articles, documents and publicity stills. The related interest series contains various articles and pictures related to Hollywood and the movie industry, as well as information about California and Tibet. All oversized items requiring larger boxes are included in the oversized items series. Lastly, the "Lost Horizon" microfilm series contains press books and visual representations of the film on 35mm microfilm. The items are all paper photocopies of their original formats, with the exceptions of a few original correspondences, a few original newspaper clippings, the negatives and the microfilm.

Dorothy Betz fonds

This fonds was divided into five series. The first series, personal records & involvement, includes CV and professional documents, invitations & other personal correspondence, and interviews with D. Betz and M. Richard, as well as collected newspaper clippings, programs and posters about friends and more broadly concerning Aboriginal achievement & issues. The second series (by far the largest), organizations and initiatives, was subdivided by topic into 3 subseries: a) law & justice, b) health & welfare, and c) community development & employment, which contain employment, board, and committee member documents, including minutes and agendas, reports, newsletters and newspaper clippings, proposals, and promotional material. The third series, resources & publications, was subdivided into a) correctional services & law, and b) other resources, which include reports and publications from government and other organizations. The fourth series, miscellaneous, contains otherwise uncategorizable documents with no identifying features. The fifth series, Elmer Betz, contains folders that contained correspondence, board materials and other documents addressed to or involving E. Betz, Dorothy’s husband.

The fonds includes biographical and family material; published and unpublished manuscripts; digital and print copies of MacDonald's books, poems, short stories, articles, and screenplays; correspondence; day planners; notebooks; photographs; discs; and tapes. The photograph collection consists of 26 photographs, 3 contact sheets, and 12 CDs of digital photographs. The tape collection consists of 2 compact discs and 4 audio cassettes. The electronic collection consists of 77 3.5" floppy disks and two CD-RWs. In addition, three medals received by MacDonald--the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, and a medal commemorating the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour--and a cork from his 40th birthday are included in the collection.
