Winnipeg Jewish Federation fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council (WJCC) related to its functions raising and distributing funds to Jewish organizations in Winnipeg and Israel, promoting Holocaust education, combatting racism and antisemitism and supporting the Jewish community in Winnipeg in various other capacities. Records include reports on the Jewish population, hate speech and Israeli-Canadian relations; correspondence with a wide variety of organizations and individuals; executive minutes and others.
The Combined Jewish appeal is one of the largest functions carried out by the WJCC. Records related to this function include meeting minutes, correspondence with volunteers, staff and potential donors, policies and procedures and financial records.
Records of the organization’s executive include correspondence, minutes, agendas, by-laws and constitutions.
Various reports were prepared either as one-time events or as regular activites. Subjects of these reports include the cities Jewish population, demographic changes, anti-Semitism and racism, camps and internal organization.
Records related to Jewish schools includes reports on tuition and salaries and correspondence on various topics.
There also exists correspondence with individuals and organization in other communities in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal and smaller cities and towns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

B'nai Brith Jewish Community Camp fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Interim Camping Commission relating to its temporary management of the B’Nai Brith Camp and its creation of a new permanent body to operate the camp. Records include meeting minutes of the committee, correspondence with the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council, the YMHA and other relevant organizations and a draft constitution of the new organization. Also included are operating budgets for the camp and architectural drawings of existing and proposed infrastructure.

B.J. Ginsburg fonds

Fonds consists of records of B.J. Ginsburg reflecting his writing career, his work as a physician and his involvement with the Yiddish arts community in Winnipeg. These records include manuscripts of short stories, essays and his novel Generation Passeth Generation Goeth as well as clippings of articles written by Ginsberg. Records relating to his medical career include a survey about Mount Carmel Clinic and correspondence with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Other records relate to his immigration from Russia and his business interests in a Kenora mine.

Beth Israel Synagogue fonds

Fonds consists of records of Beth Israel Synagogue including meeting minutes; marriage, cemetery and circumcision registers; and publications.

Meeting minutes include those of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors and of the Sisterhood of Beth Israel. The minutes cover all aspects of the synagogue’s operations including religious services and rituals, building management, finances, fundraising, staffing and social events.

Published records of the synagogue include programs for the building’s consecration as well as its 10th and 20th anniversaries, bulletins and notices and a children’s cookbook.

Other records include a scrapbook of newspaper clippings regarding the Hebrew Sick Benefit Association and the founding of Beth Israel and interviews with residents of HSBA gardens at its opening.

Chavurat Tefilah (Fellowship of Prayer Synagogue) fonds

Fonds consists of records of Chavurat Tefilah (Fellowship of Prayer) Syngagogue including executive meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records and architectural drawings. In addition to administrative and religious issues, the main subjects of the records are public programming and fundraising.

Executive meeting minutes discuss public programming, religious practices, administration and building maintenance. Also included in the minutes are architectural drawings of proposed building expansions.

Correspondence mostly relates to fundraising projects and public programming.

Fonds consists of records created or compiled by Cherie Smith relating to her writing of books about her family’s history. Records include drafts of books, research and publicity.

Draft manuscripts include copies of Mendel’s Children: A Family Chronicle that have been heavily annotated by people reviewing them as well as copies of unpublished manuscripts. Also included are flyers and reviews for Mendel’s Children.

Research material for the books include maps of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Pale of Settlement; correspondence and copies of published materials.

Doris Margolis fonds

Fonds consists of records created or acquired by Doris Margolis related to her work with Jewish musical groups and other Jewish organizations. Records include sheet music for works written by Margolis and programs for musical performances and other events in the Winnipeg Jewish Community.

Sheet music and scripts include those for Yiddish and English songs and musical skits written by Doris Margolis for the Jewish Women’s Musical Club and for Hadassah-WIZO. Also included is other published sheet music for Yiddish and English for works performed by the Jewish Women’s Musical Club or the Golden Age Choir.

Also included are volumes compiled by Doris Margolis about the history of the Jewish Women’s Club and the Golden Age Choir. These volumes include newspaper clippings, programs, photographs and musical scores.

Other records include programs for events at Shaarey Zedek Syngagogue and Hadassah-WIZO and portions of her autobiography.

Elhanon Hanson fonds

Fonds consists of records of Elhanon Hanson relating to his writing and his involvement with Paole Zion and other Jewish organizations in Edmonton. Records include manuscripts of his writings, meeting minutes and personal correspondence.

Handwritten and typed manuscripts include articles and short stories, mostly in Yiddish. The topic of most of the articles are related to Zionism but also include other subjects related to the Jewish community in Edmonton.

The correspondence mostly relates to his writing but also reflects his work with Jewish organizations and some of a personal nature.

Also included in these records are the minute books and correspondence of Paole Zion of Edmonton.

Other records include pamphlets for community events and published material on Zionism and on anti-semitism.

Max Narvey B’nai Brith Lodge No. 1846 fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Max Narvey Lodge of B’nai Brith in Melville, Saskatchewan including meeting minutes, correspondence and ledgers. The correspondence is mostly with the regional office of B’nai Brith and lists the members of the lodge. Also included are constitutions and directories of B’Nai Brith District No. 6 and a B’nai Brith guide to rituals.

Fonds consists of publications, correspondence, reports and other records of the Jewish Historical Centre of Western Canada (JHC) and its predecessor organizations. The records were created in support of the organization’s mandate to preserve and promote the history of Jews in Western Canada. This includes records of the JHC and its predecessor organizations: the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada, the Ed and Marion Vickar Jewish Museum of Western Canada and the Freeman Family Foundation Holocaust Education Centre.
Correspondence includes research requests from members of the public. This also includes correspondence with Jewish organizations throughout Canada, donors, board members and archives and museum associations.
Other records include internal policies, annual reports, invitations, project planning, meeting minutes, membership lists, newsletters, cash books, invoices and press releases.
