#1 Conflict, Violence and War

The material in this series is comprised of a wide variety of types of records, especially news media sources. Most of the records included in this series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series contains records that pertain to conflict, violence and war with a strong focus on Canadian and – especially – American involvement. Prominent topics covered in the series include ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, wars in Vietnam and Yugoslavia, Canadian foreign policy and involvement in international conflicts, Ridd’s anti-war stance (brought on more by the nature of the conflicts than pacifist theology), violence in society, the Cold War and the role of the United States as an imperialist nation or rogue state in international affairs.

*#10 Sermons, Theology and United Church Material

The series is comprised of a number of types of records, including sermon transcripts written by Ridd and a large number of records generated by the United Church of Canada. Many of the records in this folder have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This series gathers together records pertaining to 1) Ridd’s work as an ordained United Church minister (both full-time and casually), 2) records generated by the United Church of Canada and 3) records relating to various denominations or theological issues. All of the records in the series have been divided into three sub-series.

*#10A Ridd's sermons and Ministerial Records

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series were originated by Ridd, although a significant portion of the records were collected by him. This sub-series pulls together the material generated by Ridd as a full-time United Church minister at Emerson – Dominion City pastoral charge in Manitoba in the late 1950s and early 1960s, his ministry at Eastside Terrace Methodist Church in Paterson, New Jersey and his casual or infrequent ministerial or church group leadership activities during his career as a professor.

#10B United Church Materials

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series originate in direct relation to – or directly from – the United Church of Canada. Many of the records in this sub-series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series pulls together records pertaining to the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario and Winnipeg Presbytery. Prominent topics found in the sub-series include education in the church, Ridd’s participation in several Winnipeg churches, outreach efforts of the United Church, changing theological positions in the United Church and the role of the church in the larger social world.

#10C Theological Matters

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series pulls together records in the collection that pertain to Christian theological matters without relating directly to either Ridd’s work as a minister or the United Church of Canada. The prominent topic in the sub-series is new or evolving theological positions, particularly in regard to liberation theology.

Many of the records in this folder have been collected, rather than originated, by Ridd. The series has been divided into three sub-series: Ridd as a professor, Ridd as a student and academic or scholarly matters.

*#11A Carl Ridd as Professor

This sub-series is comprised of materials generated by Carl Ridd’s teaching activities, such as course outlines, examinations, lecture notes, class handouts and student assignments. Records in this sub-series have been either collected or originated by Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s work as a professor of Religious Studies at the University of Winnipeg. Records in the sub-series relate most prominently to the following courses (taught or planned): “Theology of Love,” “Love in the Western World,” “Religion and Social Change,” “Literature of the Bible,” “Exploring Religion: Bible,” “Crisis of Faith in the 20th Century,” “Religious Quest in the Modern Age,” “Global War System” and “Religion and Ethical Dimensions: the City.” Records pertaining to guest lectures by Ridd, as well as Ridd’s research interests, are also gathered in the sub-series.

The sub-series is comprised of a variety of types of materials generated by Carl Ridd’s work as a student in Manitoba and New Jersey, such as class notes, assignments and course handouts. Records in this sub-series have been either collected or originated by Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s studies in English, Theology and Religion and Literature (Ridd’s studies in Education are not strongly represented in the collection).

The sub-series is comprised of a variety of types of records. Many of the records in the sub-series were originated, rather than collected, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records in the collection that were generated as a result of Ridd’s academic career (either as a student or an instructor) that pertain less to specific courses or topics of study and more to administration and scholarly duties fulfilled outside the classroom. Prominent topics in the sub-series include Ridd’s interactions with students outside the classroom, considerations of teaching in a university, Ridd’s administrative work in the Department of Religious Studies, United College and the University of Winnipeg and Ridd’s role as a thesis supervisor.
