W.E. Gladstone fonds

The fonds consists of one letter from W.E. Gladstone to George Grub, A.M. (1812-1892) dated June 22, 1863, London. George Grub is the author of An ecclesiastical history of Scotland: from the introduction of Christianity to the present time (1861). In the letter, Gladstone demonstrates considerable support for Mr. Cheyne's work in the Church.

Collection consists of records from a wide variety of sources that were acquired by the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada (JHC) and its predecessors and that were arranged and described on an item or file level rather than at a fonds level. In addition to the numerous sources of the material, the format, subject matter and function of the records varies. Records creators include individuals, organizations as well as the JHC itself and its predecessors.

Corporate records creators represented in the collection consist of numerous secular and religious Jewish organizations. These are mostly Winnipeg based but also include some from other communities in western Canada. These organization include: Hadassah, Histradut, the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA), Zionist organizations, synagogues, I.L. Peretz school, B’nai Brith lodges, the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council, and Mt. Carmel Clinic.

Individual records creators are equally diverse, including politicians, rabbis, business owners, labour activists and others involved in the Jewish communities of Western Canada. These include Max Steinkopf, Saul Cherniack, Leible Hersfield and others.

Records formats include: correspondence, newsletters, programs, annual reports, handwritten books, minutes and financial statements. Many of the records are photocopies of originals. There are also a small number of artefacts such as pins and buttons.

Jellis Family fonds

The fonds consists of farm records, legal documents, geneaological information, diaries, photographs, and memorabilia pertaining to the Jellis family farm. The material contains a variety of land deeds and titles, oil leases and indentures, grain Permit Books, bills and receipts for farm equipment, and diary entries relating to the Jellis's agricultural operation which complements the repository's other holdings and will interest anyone involved in agricultural research, particularly in Southwest Manitoba. Six letters between an American and Canadian Jellis cousin during World War I are of particular interest.

Hiebert, Brown Family fonds

The Hiebert, Brown Family fonds represents stories, experiences and contributions of three generations of a Mennonite-Northumberland family painting a vivid picture of life in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the first half of the 20th century. The fonds consists of biographical information on all members of the Hiebert, Brown family, their correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Also included are Paul Hiebert's audio-recordings and a manuscript, "Willows Revisited" (1970); Wallace Brown's recollection of the Winnipeg General Strike (June 21, 1919); Catherine Brown's genealogical research material into the Hiebert-Brown family's roots; and material pertaining to Catherine Brown's cousin, Erdman Penner, a cartoonist for the Walt Disney Company from the 1930s to the 1950s.

The collection consists of eighteen black and white photographs of figures from the 1885 North-West Rebellion. Fifteen of the photographs are originals (1869-1890) and three are photographs of photographs. Also included are four negatives of death certificates, the Charles Pelham Mulhavey book entitled The History of the North-West Rebellion of 1885, a telegram, a letter, and a photocopy.

The first accession (A10-92) is divided into two series. They include published articles and manuscripts, and photographs. The photograph collection consists of 22,719 slides, 3157 photographs, 3209 negatives, 2 compact discs, and 1 VHS video cassette.

The second accession (A11-68) is divided into 9 series. They include biographical information and field journals, published articles and manuscripts, teaching notes, correspondence, research materials, oversize materials, photographs, audiotapes, and maps. The photograph collection consists of 343 photographs, 99 negatives, 2 films, 30 compact discs, 41 VHS video cassettes, 2 Beta cassettes, and 15 DVDs. The tape collection consists of 13 audio cassettes. The map collection consists of 2 maps.

The third accession (A14-40) is comprised of 7 series. The first series comprises a photograph collection containing 2689 photos , 1503 negatives, 23 contact sheets, 6 sketches. The second series is a slide collection containing 6450 slides. 21 videocassettes comprise the third series. Series four contains biographical and family information. Series five is comprised of articles written by Riewe & Oakes. Series six consists of course notes and research material. The final oversize series contains Riewe's academic degrees.
