Canadian Jewish Congress, Western Division fonds

Fonds reflects the work done by the Canadian Jewish Congress, Western Division to support and aid members of the Jewish community. Textual records consist of correspondence (concerning congress activities, programs and fundraising as well as relief and aid services between the Western Division and the divisions and organizations of the Canadian Jewish Congress, other aid organizations and individuals seeking assitance); minutes; reports (describing activities and operations of the divisions and aid organizations of the Canadian Jewish Congress as well as other aid organizations); memoranda; publications (including conference proceedings, organizational bulletins and publications supporting the Jewish Community and fighting against anti-Semitism, discrimination and prejudice); financial records; and lists of Holocaust survivors. There are a limited number of photographs (including identification pictures and rural and urban scenes) as well as two artefacts (letter presses).
The records reflect the Western Division’s programs, projects and World War II aid efforts as well as its relationship with the National, Eastern and Central Divisions of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the aid organizations under the direction of the Canadian Jewish Congress, including the Winnipeg Congress Council, the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society and the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies as well as other aid organizations, including the World Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.
These records are predominately arranged by subject matter and the organization, branch or committee which the documents are related to.

Winnipeg Jewish Federation fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council (WJCC) related to its functions raising and distributing funds to Jewish organizations in Winnipeg and Israel, promoting Holocaust education, combatting racism and antisemitism and supporting the Jewish community in Winnipeg in various other capacities. Records include reports on the Jewish population, hate speech and Israeli-Canadian relations; correspondence with a wide variety of organizations and individuals; executive minutes and others.
The Combined Jewish appeal is one of the largest functions carried out by the WJCC. Records related to this function include meeting minutes, correspondence with volunteers, staff and potential donors, policies and procedures and financial records.
Records of the organization’s executive include correspondence, minutes, agendas, by-laws and constitutions.
Various reports were prepared either as one-time events or as regular activites. Subjects of these reports include the cities Jewish population, demographic changes, anti-Semitism and racism, camps and internal organization.
Records related to Jewish schools includes reports on tuition and salaries and correspondence on various topics.
There also exists correspondence with individuals and organization in other communities in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal and smaller cities and towns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Rabbi Israel Isaac Kahanovitch fonds

Fonds consists of marriage registers and other records of Rabbi Israel Isaac Kahanovitch as well as additional records collected by family members Nazi war crimes.

Volumes of marriage registers record information about the bride and groom and other details about the wedding. Later volumes use the official City of Winnipeg forms and record more information than earlier volumes.

Other records of Kahanovitch relate to religious divorces, immigration and other legal documents. These records also include condolence cards on the death of his wife and cards to his family after his own death.

Newspaper clippings relate to Nazi war crimes, war criminals in Canada and anti-Semitism. These appear to have been collected by other members of the Kahanovitch family well after the rabbi’s death and do not appear to be related to Rabbi Kahanovitch.

Samuel Freedman fonds

Fonds consists of records acquired by Samuel Freedman, mostly relating to his involvement with Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Records from the Hebrew University include volumes of photographs, newspaper clippings and other records presented to Samuel Freedman in appreciation of his philanthropy towards the university. The photographs depict Freedman visiting the university and activities supported by his donations, including the Mr. Justice Samuel Freedman Foundation for Post Graduate Studies.

Other records include a souvenir album from a convention of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, programs for Negev Dinners and a volume recognizing his donations to the Jewish National Fund.

Also included is the guest book from the ceremony appointing Freedman as the Chancellor of the University of Manitoba.
