Fonds
1950-2008
This fonds consists of material on the aboriginal history, culture, education, health, housing, and politics. Walter Rudnicki was an active participant in many of the subjects collected by him in the course of his life. In the most cases, this material is organized into themes and contains correspondence, government documents, reports, press releases, newspaper clippings, and documents of many aboriginal organizations and their leaders.
This fonds contains documents pertaining to the life of William Hespeler, such as confirmation of attending the Polytechnic Institute in Karlsruhe (1847-1849), of deferment from military service in 1850, of immigration to Canada, and of naturalization as a British subject. The fonds includes the items taken to Russia in 1872 (i.e. responses from Ottawa to the Russian Mennonite inquiries about priveledges been sought such as exemption from military service). The fonds also contains various items with the autographs of individuals such as Otto von Bismark, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, and the British monarch, Queen Victoria. The documents pertain to Hespeler's service to Canada or Germany.
The William Wallace fonds consists of hundreds of letters that Wiliam and his brother Andrew, wrote to their sister Maggie, who was in Scotland. The correspondence dates from 1881 until 1904. The first letter, dated 22 March 1881, was written by both William and Andrew who were aboard the S.S. Prussia as they sailed to North America from Scotland. The last letter was written on 4 January, 1904, by William Wallace. This letter was written to inform Maggie and her husband that William had reserved a homestead in Maggie's husband's name. William was keenly interested in everything going on around him; his letters and Andrew's reveal what life was like for inexperienced settlers on the Canadian agricultural frontier in the last years of the ninteenth century. Fonds touches on a variety of social, political and economic themes.
Collection consists of two ledger-sized scrapbooks of theatre-related clippings from Winnipeg newspapers from 1914 to 1927 and one smaller scrapbook listing, alphabetically, the people profiled in J. B. McGeachy’s “I First Saw” column in the Winnipeg Free Press from 1921-1929.
