University Relations Communications Photographs

  • CA UWA 03.008, 04.008, 05.005
  • Fonds
  • 1894 - 2002

Fonds consists of images collected or produced by the Media Department and the University Relations Department (under its various appellations: please see Administrative History) that document the institutional life and history of the University of Winnipeg, United College, and Wesley College. This account includes the occupations and lifestyles of University faculty, staff, students, alumni, and guests, acting in formal and informal contexts; construction and external or internal architectural features of campus buildings; and the official and unofficial activities of various administrative and academic bodies within the University. The Media Department’s photographer Peter Tittenberger created many of the images during his employment, 1979-1995; outside photographers are credited as well. The images were used as documentation of these events and functions, as well as in various print and radio media publicizing and advertising the University to potential and current students, alumni, donors, and the public. The images encompass the years 1894-2002, the majority of which cover the latter half of the 20th century; the vast majority of the images were taken from the University of Winnipeg campus, with a small number from other locations in Winnipeg. They are organized broadly by the institutional function or body documented, or by the role of the people featured in the images: they form nine series, with a tenth comprised of images which could not be clearly enough identified to sort into other subjects. Approximately three quarters of the fonds are colour or black & white prints, with the other quarter as slides.

Winnipeg Press Club Collection

  • CA UWA 15.007
  • Collection
  • 1953, 1956-1960, 1963-1967

The collection consists of eleven programs for a satirical show called "Beer and Skits", which was created by the Winnipeg Press Club (WPC) and the Sock and Buskin Club. The event started as the WPC "Smoker" in 1933-1934 and it adapted the name "Beer and Skits" on its program in 1945. The show provided an important social and professional bridge between newsmen, the judiciary and the constabulary. Nate Zimmerman, a theatre critic for the Winnipeg Tribune, set the rules for "Beer and Skits" which were no smut, no religion and no women. These rules remained in effect until 1983, the show's 50th anniversary, when women picketed the show which attracted national news coverage. When women were allowed to join the club in 1984, "Beer and Skits" went through some evolutionary changes.

"Beer and Skits" ended just shy of its 75th anniversary. However, cast and crew wanted to keep the show going and in 2008, the BS Comedy Players Incorporated, a non-profit group, continued the show. The Press Club claims that "Beer and Skits" still currently stands as North America's longest running revue.
