Herzlia Academy fonds

Fonds consists of administrative and student records of Herzlia Academy. Student records include attendance records, intelligence tests and books recording final grades. Records relating to the construction of the building on Brock Street include correspondence with construction firms and financial supporters and one architectural drawing. Other administrative records include teacher attendance records, notices for staff and records of a joint project with a school in Israel. The fonds also includes one calendar from the Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun synagogue.

Herzlia Academy

Irma Penn fonds

Fonds consists of records of Irma Penn reflecting her art, education, volunteer work, genealogical research and her husband’s service during the Spanish Civil War.

Records include scrapbooks documenting her art and her volunteer work through newspaper clippings, photographs and ephemera.

Penn’s educational career is reflected in diplomas, her Bachelor of Education thesis and educational software that she programmed.

Fonds also includes examples of her art and poetry and a movie about her creation of a Torah scroll.

Genealogical research includes family histories of both the Epp and Penn families.

Also included is the war diary of her husband Marvin among other records of his military service.

Irma Penn

Jewish Child and Family Service fonds

Fonds consists of records of Jewish Child and Family Service (JCFS), mostly regarding executive meetings, as well as small amounts of records from related organizations.

JCFS records include board meeting minutes, committee reports, annual reports, constitutions and amendments and correspondence with board members, related organizations and the provincial government.

The other organizations whose records are included in this fonds are Mount Carmel Clinic, the Jewish Old Folks Home and the Saskatoon Council of Jewish Women. These records consist of minute and ledger books and annual reports. It is unclear how these records came to be with those of the JCFS.

Jewish Child and Family Service (Winnipeg)

Jewish Children’s Home and Aid Society fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Jewish Children’s Home and Aid Society and related organizations including annual reports, articles of incorporation, meeting minutes and correspondence.

Meeting minutes and reports are from the Executive Committee and relate to a variety of aspects of the organization. Records also include an extensive report on the state of the orphanage and recommendations for future operations. Also included is a history of the founding of the orphanage written by one of the participants.

Related organizations whose records are included are the Esther Robinson Orphanage and United Hebrew Social Services Bureau.

Jewish Foundation of Manitoba fonds

Fonds consists of publications of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and a project on the organizations history.

Publications consist of annual reports, brochures and copies of the newsletter The Jewish Foundation Links.

For the fiftieth anniversary of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba a project was undertaken in partnership with the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada to compile biographical information on the 122 “Founders” who signed the organizations founding document. The result of this was two volumes of biographies and photographs compiled from the holdings of the Jewish Heritage Centre and from information provided by family members of the Founders.

Jewish Foundation of Manitoba

Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada fonds

Fonds consists of publications, correspondence, reports and other records of the Jewish Historical Centre of Western Canada (JHC) and its predecessor organizations. The records were created in support of the organization’s mandate to preserve and promote the history of Jews in Western Canada. This includes records of the JHC and its predecessor organizations: the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada, the Ed and Marion Vickar Jewish Museum of Western Canada and the Freeman Family Foundation Holocaust Education Centre.
Correspondence includes research requests from members of the public. This also includes correspondence with Jewish organizations throughout Canada, donors, board members and archives and museum associations.
Other records include internal policies, annual reports, invitations, project planning, meeting minutes, membership lists, newsletters, cash books, invoices and press releases.

Collection consists of photographs and other images acquired by the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada and its predecessors. The focus of the collection is on Jewish life in Western Canada from the earliest settlement to the 21st Century but also includes photographs from other parts of Canada, the United States, Europe, Israel and reproductions of historical images of Jewish life over the centuries.

The records come from a wide variety of sources, including families, individuals, professional photographers and a number of Jewish organizations. Individuals who provided records include politicians, religious figures, business persons and others from a various walks of life. Organizations include the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, synagogues, women’s organizations, mutual aid societies and others.

The collection includes depictions of a broad number of subjects. These may include formal family and individual photographs, farm life, religious activities, political activities, sporting teams and events, charitable work, images of atrocities during the holocaust, schoolchildren, military activities among many others. Also included are photographs of Jewish artefacts.

The geographic focus of the collection is Western Canada primarily depicts Winnipeg and other Jewish communities throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and northwestern Ontario. Some material also persons and places in British Columbia and a small number in Toronto and Montreal and other parts of Canada. Many of the records also include images of Jewish immigrants and their families in Europe prior to their emigration. Other photographs were taken in Israel, reflecting Jewish Canadian work or travel there as well as a smaller number from the United States.

A small number of artefacts and textual records can also be found in photograph albums and scrapbooks.

Jewish Women's Musical Club fonds

Fonds consists of records created or collected by the Jewish Women’s Musical Club related to performances and sponsored programs.

Records created by the club include board meeting minutes, invitations and programs for events and membership lists. Also included are scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, photographs, programs and other records documenting the organizations activities.
