Artur Laser fonds

This fonds consists of the memoirs of Artur Laser, a German Baptist Christian, who moved into a Mennonite community as a child, lived and went to school in Tiegerweide and Rueckenau, Molotschna, was commandeered to work in a Russian concentration camp in 1940, and who continued to meet and live among German-speaking Baptists and Mennonites, as religious life began to re-organize after Stalin's death. The memoirs provide political background against which many experiences are described from 1933 up until he immigrated to Canada in 1973. The memoirs includes notes on each change of Soviet leadership from Stalin through to Gorbechev, and how it affected religious and social life in the Soviet Union.

Bargen Letter Collection

This collection of letters is divided into two sections -- over 500 letters written between 1930-1938 and almost 800 letters written between 1939-1977, covering especially the post-World War II period and up to the early 1970s. There is also one file containing family travel documents for Franz and Liese Bargen's immigration to Canada in 1930.

The letters written between 1930 and 1938 present a cross section of the experiences of over 30 families -- relatives of Franz and Liese Bargen. The letters originate in Sagradowka (a Mennonite settlement in Ukraine) and from families in exile. Letters to and from family outside the forced-labour camps operated by Joseph Stalin were the lifeline for many prisoners during this time of terror. The writers of the letters knew the risks of making contact with "the West" -- prison or execution, yet the letters continued to arrive in Canada through circuitous and covert routes. The Bargen family responded with letters, money and packages, knowing that much material would not reach its destination.

Each item in the Bargen Letter Collection is numbered for easy reference. The post-war letters are not totally sorted as the earlier ones. The "pre-war" letters have also been digitally reproduced by the MHC staff in 2005.

Benjamin Ewert fonds

The World War materials record Ewert's efforts to ensure the government would grant military exemption. The materials include petitions, records of financial gifts, articles and correspondence with such leaders as Abraham Doerksen, David Toews, Jacob Hoeppner and B.B. Janz. Ewert also kept a list of Mennonite men from Conference churches who were in the military during the wars. There is also a some correspondence of Julius Toews with Prime Minster Neville Camberlain of England. The CMC materials newspaper clippings, notes, articles by Ewert and others, and correspondence. There are files on topics such as marriage licensing; articles on the German hymnal, conference statistics, program bulletins for teachers and ministers, the Canadian Mennonite, Canadian Mennonite Bible College (CMBC) conferences, new Mennonite immigrants to Canada and notes on annual conference session notes. The Mennonite History materials include numerous newspaper clippings from Die Steinbach Post, Die Mennonitische Rundschau, The Winnipeg Free Press, Carillon News, and Der Nordwester regarding Mennonites in Canada, Paraguay, Mexico, and Brazil. There are also files dealing with the publication of Wohin? Woher? Mennoniten, and articles written by Ewert and others dealing with Mennonite history. The church related material consists of things that Ewert collected through his work in specific congregations, namely the congregations at Edenburg and Bethel Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. Items such as a minister's manual, German New Testament, sermons, and newspaper clippings can be found in this section. The Mennonitische Schulkommission materials consist of the records of an organizaiton that met with politian Valentine Winkler about the governments interference in the operation of Mennonite schools. There is also a 1892 attendance record for the Edenburg school where Ewert taught. The Foreign Bible Society records include materials which Ewert collected while involved with this organization from 1952 to 1955. The documents from the Christian Heritage Library contain some hand-written notes and a small booklet, "Gebutstags-Wunsche", printed in 1912.

This fonds contains bulletins (1968-2001), congregational meeting minutes which include at times financial statements (1962-1990), financial statements (1969-1980), annual reports (1975-1993), directories (1977-1994), programme ([1971]), congregational history (1978), newsletters ([198-?]-1997), and constitution and rules ([196-?]-1981). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation Didsbury, Alberta. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.

Bernhard and Anna (Penner) Krahn Notice of Death Collection

The materials in the collection consist of handwritten letters notifying friends and family of a death, a few wedding invitations, pattern for a skirt and a recipe. A list of people in several villages are noted at the end signifying to whom the notice should be passed. The collection is helpful in understanding funeral practices in the Mennonite community, verifying and supplementing vital records already recorded in church and government sources. In addition some information as to the residents of some villages can be gleaned. Most common villages mentioned in the letters include Schoenweise, Reinland, Kronsfeld, Blumenfeld, Haskett, and Gnadenthal.

This fonds contains materials that Bernhard Schellenberg created, and materials that he collected in his role as conference archivist. It consists primarily of correspondence, notebooks, and papers. The notebooks and papers mostly concern Russian Mennonite history, biographies of Mennonite leaders, and Mennonite life and thought. There are also some artworks and some publications, also relating mostly to Mennonite history. The majority of the material is original and handwritten. Finally, the collection includes several maps and photographs.

This fonds contains four sermons which include a record of when and where each was preached. Sermon topics include: 1) The second coming of the Lord at the end of time and his judgement of the good and the evil. 2) True Christians fear of the Lord based on Luke 5:8-9. 3) Reconcilliation and unity in the Church referring to Romans 11-22. 4) Resisting the powers of this world and putting on the armor of God referring to Ephesians 6:10-18.

This fonds consists of personal correspondence received and written from 1949-1999. These records document Bernie Wiebe's vocational and personal life as a Mennonite leader, educator, counselor, preacher, radio minister, editor of a denominational paper, and husband and father. Some files relate to the specific congregation or instituion for which he worked. There are also files related to his trip and tours to Russia, Europe, Holy Land, and South America; as well as a few items of family interest and a personal nature. One series of files contains his private correspondence with Dr. G.K. Epp and Dr. George Richert, the fiirst presidents of Menno Simons College, as well as private conrrespondence with specific churches and individuals regarding conflicts in the church between 1986-1999.
