Jewish Children’s Home and Aid Society fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Jewish Children’s Home and Aid Society and related organizations including annual reports, articles of incorporation, meeting minutes and correspondence.

Meeting minutes and reports are from the Executive Committee and relate to a variety of aspects of the organization. Records also include an extensive report on the state of the orphanage and recommendations for future operations. Also included is a history of the founding of the orphanage written by one of the participants.

Related organizations whose records are included are the Esther Robinson Orphanage and United Hebrew Social Services Bureau.

Fonds consists of records of Sam Drache, mostly relating to his work with various Zionist organizations in Canada. Records include correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings and financial records.

Sam Drache’s involvement with the Zionist Organization of Canada, Jewish National Fund, United Palestine Appeal and other
Zionist organizations is documented in correspondence, financial records, newsletters and memoranda.

Personal records include correspondence, vital statistics records of family members and tax records.

Other records in the fonds appear to be related to historical projects. These include inventories of records about the history of Zionism in Canada as well as research conducted by Sam Drache intended to be used in his memoirs.

Orenstein family fonds

Fonds consists of scrapbooks, newspaper clippings and other records about the Orenstein family.

Newspaper clippings document family events such as births, bar mitzvahs, marriages, deaths, sporting events and participation in public events. Other clippings relate to boxing matches not involving family members.

Other records include greeting cards sent between family members, telegrams of congratulation on the birth of children, photographs and certificates. Also includes programs for organizations of interest to the family including the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada and the Negev Dinner.

Esther Korchynski fonds

Fonds consists of personal records of Esther Korchynski and records relating to her work with various choir groups in Winnipeg. Personal records include photographs of family members and of labour groups and some genealogical research. Choir related records mostly consist of music scores.

The musical scores are in English, Yiddish, Hebrew and other languages and include popular music, traditional folk songs, feminist and international labour anthems. The scores include published and handwritten material.

Organizations depicted in the photographs include Sholem Aleichem School, Liberty Temple and the Jewish Worker’s Party.

Canadian Jewish Congress, Western Division fonds

Fonds reflects the work done by the Canadian Jewish Congress, Western Division to support and aid members of the Jewish community. Textual records consist of correspondence (concerning congress activities, programs and fundraising as well as relief and aid services between the Western Division and the divisions and organizations of the Canadian Jewish Congress, other aid organizations and individuals seeking assitance); minutes; reports (describing activities and operations of the divisions and aid organizations of the Canadian Jewish Congress as well as other aid organizations); memoranda; publications (including conference proceedings, organizational bulletins and publications supporting the Jewish Community and fighting against anti-Semitism, discrimination and prejudice); financial records; and lists of Holocaust survivors. There are a limited number of photographs (including identification pictures and rural and urban scenes) as well as two artefacts (letter presses).
The records reflect the Western Division’s programs, projects and World War II aid efforts as well as its relationship with the National, Eastern and Central Divisions of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the aid organizations under the direction of the Canadian Jewish Congress, including the Winnipeg Congress Council, the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society and the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies as well as other aid organizations, including the World Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.
These records are predominately arranged by subject matter and the organization, branch or committee which the documents are related to.

Spivak family fonds

Fonds consists of records of Mira and Sidney Spivak documenting their political careers as well as personal records and family photographs. Newspaper clippings make up the majority of the records.

Several files of newspaper clippings document various periods or events in the political careers of the Spivaks. These files also include photographs, copies of speeches and election campaign materials. Other clippings files relate to the contributions of other families to the Jewish community in Winnipeg.

Family photographs document the Spivak, Steele and Portigal families.

Other records include personal correspondence of Sidney Spivak.

Min Heft fonds

Fonds consists of records of Min Heft reflecting her work with the Religious Affairs Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress Western Division (CJC) and other organizations as well as her personal interests.

Records of the CJC Religious Affairs Committee include correspondence and meeting minutes. In particular, the records reflect her work establishing a Jewish chaplaincy service in Manitoba hospitals.

Other records include scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, programs and newsletters, mostly related to Shaarey Zedek Synagogue.
