Henry Sandham fonds

  • Fonds
  • 1842-1910

The items described here consist of personal correspondence and documents pertaining to Sandham's artistic commissions, photographic and print reproductions of Sandham's works, and a scrapbook of news clippings.

Scrapbook

This series consists of newspaper clippings pasted in a bound volume, with handwritten captions in ink, the latter possibly supplied by Henry Sandham. Clippings pertain to Sandham's career and his works, with occasional clippings about other artists and some longer illustrated magazine features with photographs and reproductions of Sandham's work. The volume ends with a bookplate illustration in colour of "Trondheim Cathedral from a painting by H. Sandham," inscribed in pencil on face "J. Werner Sauric/08." Loose clippings include two illustrated newspaper articles by Henry Sandham at the back of the volume, both folded: "Island of Sark, Where A Man Can Do As He Pleases," 1908; and "Henry Sandham's Excursions in the Azores," 1902.

Correspondence and Documents

Items described here consist of personal correspondence and documents pertaining to Henry Sandham's artistic commissions. Of special significance is correspondence, dating from 1902, received from President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1885 and again in 1893 Sandham illustrated two books on ranch life and the west published by Teddy Roosevelt before he became president. Other items pertain to Henry Sandham's commission to paint "The Dawn of Liberty" in 1886. Also found here are personal travel documents and letters of reference.
