Bunting Collection

Collection includes: a photograph of six women doing hand sewing out of doors, ca.1910, possibly at The Pas; a copy photograph of Wynona Bunting, ca.1916, wearing an ermine cape which has also been donated to the Museum; two photographs of the interior of Bunting's General Store at The Pas, ca.1913.

This album (designated A-15) contains 18 leaves with openings to insert 64 Cabinet Card photographs and 12 Cartes de Visites (for a total of 76 photographs). Eighty-six photographs were found in the album dating from ca.1880-1915.

Carr Family Collection

Included in this collection is a photograph of the Carr family home of Woodleigh cottage, ca.1880 - 85; five photographs of members of the Carr family in England, ca.1880 - 1950; ten photographs of Robert and Evelyn Carr and their children, ca.1885 - 1916, including a view of the family homestead at Virden in the early days, ca.1895 - 1900; a carte de visite of an an unidentified young girl (possibly Evelyn Holmes), ca.1872/73; and an unidentified wedding party posed in a garden, ca.1875. Also included with this collection is a small pencil sketch of an unidentified manor house.

This small collection includes: an informal portrait of the bride and groom along with the best man and the matron of honor at the Fort Garry after the wedding; a large informal portrait of the bride and groom as they are leaving Knox United Church following the ceremony.

Items consist of photographic images featuring Hyma Helen Newland, Caryl Patricia Johnston, and (presumably) Catherine Haimes on the occasion of their marriages. Also found here is a photograph of Georgina M. Jury, from whom the donor's grandfather, W. S. Johnston, received a family Christening Robe (also donated to the Costume Museum in 1998).

Coltart Collection

The bulk of the collection, 24 photographs, consists of cartes de visites portraits of men and women, alone and in groups, and one child. All are ca.1865 - 1875. Some of the subjects appear in more than one photograph. None of the subjects of these cartes are identified. The remaining photographs are Cabinet Card, ca.1885 – 1890 and smaller studio portraits, ca.1890 - 1920. Some of the photographs have notes written on the reverse identifying the subjects but it is not known who wrote the notes. Several of the studio photographs feature women graduates and academics.

Items described here consist of five black and white photographs including a collage print of the Brandon Normal School Fall Class, 1914; two portraits taken on the day of Ira and Cordelia's wedding in 1917, a snapshot of Donald Craik wearing his father's baby dress, and a snapshot of Russell Craik with two other people.

Craig Collection

The collection consists of 7 Cartes de Visites featuring full length portraits dating from 1860 - 1870. The subjects are identified in only two of the Cartes and one of these is a collector's Carte which features the Prince and Princess of Wales on the occasion of their engagement in 1862. The other identified subject is Esther Craig. Also in the collection are 2 Cabinet Cards dating from 1885 and featuring a little girl identified as Alice Chisolm and a couple identified as Duncan and Mary Chisolm.

Crookshanks Collection

This collection consists of an album (designated as A8) measuring 21 x 27 cm and containing 16 leaves with window openings into which photographs could be inserted. Fourteen leaves were designed to hold 28 cabinet cards (of which 2 were missing) and 2 leaves had openings for 16 cartes de visite (of which 3 were missing). The album contained 39 photographs and one scripture card. Also included with this collection are three loose photographs (PHO-196 to198), one of which is a framed portrait of a woman identified as Jane McDonald wearing her wedding gown (PHO-198).

With one exception the subjects of these photographs, all dating from around the turn of the century, are not identified. It is not known if the unidentified subjects have any connection with the donor and the photographs were possibly collected as part of the donor's interest in costume. The photographs are all individual studio portraits. Four are portrait busts of women. One is a full length portrait of a woman identified as Katherine Tupper, the granddaughter of Sir Charles Tupper, wearing her 'coming out' dress, ca.1905 - 1910. There is also a full length portrait of a young girl sitting on a stool wearing a floral wreath in her hair and holding a crook.
