United College – University of Winnipeg Series

This series contains documents pertaining to Lockhart’s hiring as Principal of United College, work as Principal of United College and later President of University of Winnipeg, involvement in the Crowe Case, retirement as President of the University of Winnipeg and continuing relationship with the University after his retirement. It also contains documentation of Lockhart’s roles outside United College and University of Winnipeg between 1954 and 1973.

Ordination and Homosexuals

This folder contains material regarding the ordination of gays and lesbians in the United Church as discussed by the 32nd General Council. The folder contains one copy of “Towards a Christian Understanding of Sexual Orientation, Lifestyles, and Ministry” and documents reacting to or commenting on it (including a Declaration of Dissent pertaining to ministers, a list of signatories and two copies of a Declaration of Dissent pertaining to moderators). It also includes documents published by the Community of Concern (including letters and reports written by Bill Fritz), two copies of the pamphlet “Membership, Ministry, and Human Sexuality,” three copies of Sang Chul Lee’s Moderator’s Letter, a sermon transcript and four newspaper articles. The contents of this file were not disturbed when order was imposed—no documents were added or removed.

This folder contains five pieces of correspondence (primary correspondent Jim Bickersmith), one invitation, one farewell speech and three newspaper clippings pertaining to Lockhart’s position of Secretary of the SCM. Three pamphlets, one attendance list, one journal article and one newspaper article regarding the World Conferences of Christian Youth in Amsterdam (1939) and Oslo (1947) are also included

Victoria University – Chancellor’s Council and Class Reunions

This folder contains five pieces of correspondence (primary correspondent Goldwin S. French), two statements, four other Chancellor’s Council-related documents, four meeting minutes and one university publication Lockhart received between 1983 and 1985 as a member of Victoria University’s Chancellor’s Council. It also contains six programs, sixteen reunion invitations and summaries, fifteen pieces of correspondence (primary correspondent Ralph S. Mills), three forms, one record of meeting minutes, nine class lists, one university publication, three receipts and two handwritten notes, all dating between 1949 and 1989, pertaining to reunions of Victoria University’s 1929 graduating class.

Kingsway-Lambton United Church

This folder contains 24 pieces of correspondence, six sermon transcripts, six pamphlets, one petition, one bond, four bulletins, two certificates of membership, one historical document written by Lockhart pertaining to the church and 19 newspaper articles pertaining to Lockhart’s role as minister in Kingsway-Lambton United Church. Of these documents one petition, two pieces of correspondence, two sermon transcripts and three articles pertain to Dr. Lockhart’s interaction with the World Council of Churches.

Scrapbook, White

This scrapbook contains letters and greeting cards of condolence sent to Lockhart on the occasion of his first wife’s death. These letters come from family friends (including Keith Muir and Carl Ridd), United Church ministers, moderators, and congregations (including moderator Robert Smith, Rev. Dr. L. George LeDrew, Norway Point Community Church, and W. R. Davies) and others (mayor of Etobicoke and the staff of Palace Pier). Four newspaper clippings, two photographs, a form response letter from Lockhart, a “Book of Memories,” and Eileen’s certificate of membership in the University Women’s club (issued 1971) are also included. No documents were added or removed when order was imposed.

Lockhart – Material re. Crowe Case

This folder contains documents relating to the Crowe Case, academic freedom and tenure. It contains a copy of one legislative act, one copy of the “University of Winnipeg Act,” one calendar, one memorandum, one speech transcript, two programs, 17 pieces of correspondence (particularly from Catherine MacDonald regarding the Crowe Case Oral History Project; other correspondents include Michael Horn and Gerry Bedford), three sets of handwritten notes, one newspaper article and two copies of “In Defense of a College” by D. S. Barber. The contents of this file were not disturbed when order was imposed—no documents were added or removed.

Writing Projects

This series consists of three lengthy writing projects of Lockhart. One of these is his autobiography, two drafts of which are in the collection. The second is his published history of the Norway Point church. The third is a draft of a document entitled “Transition from College to University.”
