125th Anniversary of Mennonites in Manitoba: 1874-1999

This film is of the celebration held at the Forks in Winnipeg on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Mennonites in Manitoba. In 1874 Russian Mennonites came down the Red River on river boats and landed at the Forks in Winnipeg to get supplies and then traveled back up the Red River and disembarked near current day Niverville, Manitoba to begin settling.

The celebration included a re-enactment of the river boat coming to the Forks with actors dressed in period costume. This event was planned by a special ad hock committee of the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society (MMHS).

*#12A Central America

A wide variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in the sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records that pertain to human rights violations, state-sponsored terror, political changes, related social justice issues and Canadian and American intervention in Central America. Nicaragua, Guatemala and especially El Salvador are treated extensively. The impact of political upheaval in Central America on Christian groups in Central America is a prominent topic in the sub-series, as are Karen Ridd’s detainment in Central America and Carl Ridd’s trip to El Salvador.

#12B Christine Lamont and David Spencer Case

A wide variety of records make up the series, many of which were originated or gathered by members of the Lamont family and passed on to Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records documenting the [allegedly unfair] detainment of Christine Lamont and David Spencer in Brazil in relation to a kidnapping ring. Prominent issues include the nature of Lamont and Spencer’s involvement in the kidnapping (and thus their guilt or innocence), lobbying by a group in Canada to have Lamont and Spencer returned to Canada and (predominantly) the unjustness of the sentence levelled against Lamont and Spencer by Brazilian authorities.

13. Exhibition records

Series consists of Exhibition records. These files generally include Loan Agreements, exhibition planning, correspondence with artists, and installation information. Records are arranged according the opening date of the exhibition, and are organized by fiscal year (April 1 to March 31). Within the fiscal year, the files are in alphabetical order according to the title of the exhibition, unless the title includes an artist's name. When an artist's last name forms part of the name of the exhibition, the records are often filed under the artist's name. "The" as part of an exhibition title is ignored. Exhibition records sometimes also contain records of exhibitions that were cancelled or rejected, or those of travelling exhibitions. Additional exhibition records may also be located in the Winnipeg Art Gallery Director's files. Records in this series represent exhibitions which opened before the incorporation of the Winnipeg Art Gallery (May 6, 1963). Illi Maria Harff was the gallery's curator from 1956 to 1969.

*#13 Literature and Authors

A wide variety of types of records make up the series, many of which were used by Carl Ridd either as a student or professor at the University of Winnipeg. Many of the records in the series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records pertaining to authors, poets and playwrights whose style or work Ridd encountered either as an English and Literature university student or as a Religious Studies professor. The work of Albert Camus, Herman Melville and Fyodor Dostoevsky receive the most extensive treatment in the series. Although the records in this series connect strongly to the documents found in sub-series #11A (Carl Ridd as Professor) and #11B (Carl Ridd as Student), the materials in this series have been grouped according to the author whose work they pertain to rather than the course or topical subject that they illumine. As such, they have been gathered together into their own series. Many of the folders that comprise this series contain only a small number of documents.
