#9C Reflection, Action, Reflection Group

A variety of types of records make up the sub-series; many – but not all – of the records originate in direct relation to the functioning of the Reflection, Action, Reflection group. Many of the records in the sub-series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together material pertaining to the Reflection, Action, Reflection group, a group that considered the role of Christians (and Christian responsibility) in Canadian political and social justice processes. The sub-series includes records relating to the founding of the group as well as its areas of concern.

*#11A Carl Ridd as Professor

This sub-series is comprised of materials generated by Carl Ridd’s teaching activities, such as course outlines, examinations, lecture notes, class handouts and student assignments. Records in this sub-series have been either collected or originated by Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s work as a professor of Religious Studies at the University of Winnipeg. Records in the sub-series relate most prominently to the following courses (taught or planned): “Theology of Love,” “Love in the Western World,” “Religion and Social Change,” “Literature of the Bible,” “Exploring Religion: Bible,” “Crisis of Faith in the 20th Century,” “Religious Quest in the Modern Age,” “Global War System” and “Religion and Ethical Dimensions: the City.” Records pertaining to guest lectures by Ridd, as well as Ridd’s research interests, are also gathered in the sub-series.

Most of the records in this sub-series have been originated by Carl Ridd, although a large number of supporting records collected by Ridd are also found in the sub-series. The sub-series gathers together records written by Ridd that he appears to have kept near-at-hand for referential use or to duplicate and pass on to others.

The sub-series is comprised of a wide variety of types of records. Many of the records in this folder have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Canada’s entry into the Free Trade Agreement. Specifically, the sub-series depicts a negative view of Free Trade (focussing on concerns and dangers).

A variety of types of records make up the series. Many of the records in the sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records pertaining to homosexuality and the rights of homosexuals in Canada.

*#10A Ridd's sermons and Ministerial Records

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series were originated by Ridd, although a significant portion of the records were collected by him. This sub-series pulls together the material generated by Ridd as a full-time United Church minister at Emerson – Dominion City pastoral charge in Manitoba in the late 1950s and early 1960s, his ministry at Eastside Terrace Methodist Church in Paterson, New Jersey and his casual or infrequent ministerial or church group leadership activities during his career as a professor.

#10C Theological Matters

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series pulls together records in the collection that pertain to Christian theological matters without relating directly to either Ridd’s work as a minister or the United Church of Canada. The prominent topic in the sub-series is new or evolving theological positions, particularly in regard to liberation theology.

The sub-series is comprised of a variety of types of materials generated by Carl Ridd’s work as a student in Manitoba and New Jersey, such as class notes, assignments and course handouts. Records in this sub-series have been either collected or originated by Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s studies in English, Theology and Religion and Literature (Ridd’s studies in Education are not strongly represented in the collection).

#8 Sports

The series contains a variety of types of records, including records generated by Ridd as a sports coach. Many of the records in this folder have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records pertaining to the importance of sport in life, as well as Ridd’s participation in organized sport as an adult. Ridd’s participation in organized sport as an amateur athlete (including his participation in Canada’s Olympic basketball team) is only indirectly referred to. Prominent topics in the series includes Ridd’s coaching of basketball teams at Rossbrook House and baseball teams in Winnipeg leagues, Ridd’s basketball accolades, the state of sport (and amateur sport) in Canada and the establishment of a Ralph King Memorial scholarship at the University of Winnipeg. *#12A Central America

A wide variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in the sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records that pertain to human rights violations, state-sponsored terror, political changes, related social justice issues and Canadian and American intervention in Central America. Nicaragua, Guatemala and especially El Salvador are treated extensively. The impact of political upheaval in Central America on Christian groups in Central America is a prominent topic in the sub-series, as are Karen Ridd’s detainment in Central America and Carl Ridd’s trip to El Salvador.
