#9 National and Civic Social Justice Issues in Canada

This series contains a wide variety of types of records. Many of the records in this series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This series gathers together records that describe and monitor social (and social justice) conditions in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada. Prominent topics at the national level include treatment of First Nations groups, responsible lifestyles, changes in Canadian agricultural practices, a “Human Context for Science and Technology” conference, civil disobedience and repression of civil disobedience, safety issues relating to food irradiation, Canadian food production, Canadian labour history and rights. Prominent topics at the provincial level include Hogwatch Manitoba and education (including religious teachings in schools). Prominent topics at the civic level include Winnipeg’s inner city, housing options for low-income families, mosquito fogging, future plans for development in Winnipeg, a demonstration against American aggression towards Grenada in 1983 and “squeegee kids."

#6 Carl Ridd Addresses, Appearances, Engagements and Publications

A wide variety of types of records make up the series, many of them originated by Carl Ridd. A large number of related documents have been collected, rather than originated, by Ridd. The series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s speaking and publishing habits that did not arise directly (although certainly indirectly) from his preaching as a United Church minister or teaching as a professor of Religious Studies. The records in this series relate topically to Ridd’s social justice concerns and academic interests.

#8 Sports

The series contains a variety of types of records, including records generated by Ridd as a sports coach. Many of the records in this folder have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records pertaining to the importance of sport in life, as well as Ridd’s participation in organized sport as an adult. Ridd’s participation in organized sport as an amateur athlete (including his participation in Canada’s Olympic basketball team) is only indirectly referred to. Prominent topics in the series includes Ridd’s coaching of basketball teams at Rossbrook House and baseball teams in Winnipeg leagues, Ridd’s basketball accolades, the state of sport (and amateur sport) in Canada and the establishment of a Ralph King Memorial scholarship at the University of Winnipeg. #7 Media and Propaganda

The series is comprised of a variety of records, including letters to the editor by Ridd and others as well as many records originating from news media sources. Many of the records in this series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records that exemplify or explain Ridd’s media critiques. Prominent issues identified in the series include honesty in the media, freedom of the press, government use of media, ownership of the media, close readings of news stories and the production of propaganda. Ridd’s media critiques are drawn from coverage of events happening in Canada and around the world.

#14 Disparate Records

A wide variety of types of records make up the series. Many of the records have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together a group of records that do not appear to have any topical or chronological cohesiveness. It is unclear how Ridd had used, or intended to use, the records as they appear in the folders. The records pertain to a wide variety of topics that include Ridd’s intellectual, ministerial and social justice interests.

*#13 Literature and Authors

A wide variety of types of records make up the series, many of which were used by Carl Ridd either as a student or professor at the University of Winnipeg. Many of the records in the series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records pertaining to authors, poets and playwrights whose style or work Ridd encountered either as an English and Literature university student or as a Religious Studies professor. The work of Albert Camus, Herman Melville and Fyodor Dostoevsky receive the most extensive treatment in the series. Although the records in this series connect strongly to the documents found in sub-series #11A (Carl Ridd as Professor) and #11B (Carl Ridd as Student), the materials in this series have been grouped according to the author whose work they pertain to rather than the course or topical subject that they illumine. As such, they have been gathered together into their own series. Many of the folders that comprise this series contain only a small number of documents.

*#12 International Social Justice Issues

A wide variety of types of records make up the series. Many of the records in the series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together records relating to Ridd’s interest in social justice issues taking place outside of Canada. Prominent issues in the series - besides those represented in the sub-series - include groups involved in international aid.

*#12A Central America

A wide variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in the sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records that pertain to human rights violations, state-sponsored terror, political changes, related social justice issues and Canadian and American intervention in Central America. Nicaragua, Guatemala and especially El Salvador are treated extensively. The impact of political upheaval in Central America on Christian groups in Central America is a prominent topic in the sub-series, as are Karen Ridd’s detainment in Central America and Carl Ridd’s trip to El Salvador.

#12B Christine Lamont and David Spencer Case

A wide variety of records make up the series, many of which were originated or gathered by members of the Lamont family and passed on to Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records documenting the [allegedly unfair] detainment of Christine Lamont and David Spencer in Brazil in relation to a kidnapping ring. Prominent issues include the nature of Lamont and Spencer’s involvement in the kidnapping (and thus their guilt or innocence), lobbying by a group in Canada to have Lamont and Spencer returned to Canada and (predominantly) the unjustness of the sentence levelled against Lamont and Spencer by Brazilian authorities.

*#11B Carl Ridd as Student

The sub-series is comprised of a variety of types of materials generated by Carl Ridd’s work as a student in Manitoba and New Jersey, such as class notes, assignments and course handouts. Records in this sub-series have been either collected or originated by Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records pertaining to Ridd’s studies in English, Theology and Religion and Literature (Ridd’s studies in Education are not strongly represented in the collection).
