The material in this series is comprised of a wide variety of types of records, especially news media sources. Most of the records included in this series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series contains records that pertain to conflict, violence and war with a strong focus on Canadian and – especially – American involvement. Prominent topics covered in the series include ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, wars in Vietnam and Yugoslavia, Canadian foreign policy and involvement in international conflicts, Ridd’s anti-war stance (brought on more by the nature of the conflicts than pacifist theology), violence in society, the Cold War and the role of the United States as an imperialist nation or rogue state in international affairs.

#10B United Church Materials

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series originate in direct relation to – or directly from – the United Church of Canada. Many of the records in this sub-series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series pulls together records pertaining to the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario and Winnipeg Presbytery. Prominent topics found in the sub-series include education in the church, Ridd’s participation in several Winnipeg churches, outreach efforts of the United Church, changing theological positions in the United Church and the role of the church in the larger social world.

#10C Theological Matters

A variety of types of records comprise the sub-series. Many of the records in this sub-series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series pulls together records in the collection that pertain to Christian theological matters without relating directly to either Ridd’s work as a minister or the United Church of Canada. The prominent topic in the sub-series is new or evolving theological positions, particularly in regard to liberation theology.

#12B Christine Lamont and David Spencer Case

A wide variety of records make up the series, many of which were originated or gathered by members of the Lamont family and passed on to Carl Ridd. The sub-series gathers together records documenting the [allegedly unfair] detainment of Christine Lamont and David Spencer in Brazil in relation to a kidnapping ring. Prominent issues include the nature of Lamont and Spencer’s involvement in the kidnapping (and thus their guilt or innocence), lobbying by a group in Canada to have Lamont and Spencer returned to Canada and (predominantly) the unjustness of the sentence levelled against Lamont and Spencer by Brazilian authorities.

#14 Disparate Records

A wide variety of types of records make up the series. Many of the records have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series gathers together a group of records that do not appear to have any topical or chronological cohesiveness. It is unclear how Ridd had used, or intended to use, the records as they appear in the folders. The records pertain to a wide variety of topics that include Ridd’s intellectual, ministerial and social justice interests.

The series is comprised of a wide variety of types of records. Most of the records within this sub-series were collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. This sub-series gathers together records covering the Gulf War, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, the American-led “War on Terror” (especially in Afghanistan) and the war against Iraq.

#1B Israel - Palestine

A wide variety of types of records make up the sub-series, including a large number of records originating from local, national and international news media sources. Many of the records have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The sub-series pulls together records pertaining to ongoing conflict and violence in the State of Israel, as well as conflict and violence on an international level directly or indirectly related to the State of Israel. Prominent topics in the sub-series include hostility between Israelis and Palestinians, anti-Semitism, the history of the Jewish people and foreign policies pertaining to the State of Israel.

#2 Canadian Politics (Federal and Provincial)

The material in this series is comprised of a wide variety of types of records. Many of the records in this series have been collected, rather than originated, by Carl Ridd. The series contains records that pertain to issues arising from both the Canadian federal government and Manitoba provincial government. Prominent topics in the series include changes to healthcare and social services, Canadian foreign policy (especially in a violent world), the state of democracy in Canada (often from a concerned perspective), scandals and decadence amongst politicians, Canada’s New Democratic Party and the nature of Canada’s constitution (especially regarding challenges to Canada’s unity).
