Action!

Series consists of the newsletter published by MACSW, Action. Action was published monthly until 1994, after which it was published bimonthly. The newsletter communicated information about the committee’s beliefs and activities with its members and shared resources and literature on women’s issues. The series also contains page proofs from the years 1978-1980 and one folder of printed headlines and keywords used in producing the proofs.

Administration, minutes, and resources

Series consists of records generated by MACSW itself, related to its administration, finances, committees, and event-planning. Records include minutes, financial documentation, member lists, grant applications, and ephemera. Series also includes a small amount of similar records from the National Action Committee of which MACSW was a branch: minutes of the Annual General Meetings and others, reports, and correspondence.

Advocacy

Series consists of records related to MACSW’s activism and lobbying on several kinds of issues: welfare, privacy, child care and support, reproductive rights, pornography, and domestic violence. The records include petitions, correspondence, faxes, posters, and press releases, as well as the research collected to support and inform the work. The records also include notes and correspondence concerning individual legal cases, fundraising efforts, and other women’s groups.

Events

Series consists of records that the Committee collected from rallies, strikes, protests, conferences, and other public events relevant to the interests and objectives of the Committee. The events focused on issues such as poverty, children’s welfare, domestic violence, cuts to public services and social assistance, and indigenous rights. Many of the events were planned by activist group Food Not Bombs. The records include information packages, posters and handouts, MACSW news releases, and correspondence.

Fonds consists of records gathered or generated by the Manitoba Action Committee on the Status of Women. The records fall into two broad categories: the first being printed media, information resources, publications, and correspondence collected from the political activities and topics in which MACSW was involved; the second being the minutes, reports, and other documents produced by MACSW itself. The records reflect MACSW’s campaign of activism on a range of related topics, both locally in Manitoba and internationally: feminism, domestic violence, sexual harassment, reproductive rights, poverty, homelessness, children’s welfare, indigenous rights, and social services. The fonds also includes issues of the newsletter Action, published by MACSW from 1978-1999.

Research files

Series consists of topical files gathered by MACSW for informational or research purposes, ranging across all the issues with which the organization involved itself. The topics include social assistance, child support, child care, domestic violence, poverty, abortion, addiction, racism, and sexual harassment, as well as the status of women in other countries. Many of the files contain material from the political publication CHO!CES, as well as government reports and publications and information packages from conferences. The material also includes minutes from other organizations, articles, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and published material.
