The fonds documents the organizational history of the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba and the recent social and cultural history of Black women in Manitoba. The fonds consists of four separate accessions: 11.003, 15.014, 16.015, and 17.008. Accession 11.003 consists of 6 series: minutes and agendas, constitution and by-laws, correspondence, events and workshops, internal publications, and external publications. Accession 15.014 includes one series containing 345 photographs. Accession 16.015 includes 10 series: meetings and reports, correspondence, events and workshops, grant applications, research materials, internal publications, external publications, electronic records, moving image records and photographs. Accession 17.008 consists of one series of presentations.

Research Materials

Series 5 contains publications and information resources that were collected by the Congress. Many pertain to black history, human rights, racism, and other related issues. Materials include posters, pamphlets and brochures, newspaper clippings, news releases or statements, and declarations.

Accession 16.015 consists of 10 series of records pertaining to the operations, events, and members of the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba. Series include minutes and reports, correspondence, events and workshops, grant applications, research materials, internal publications, external publications, electronic records, moving image records, and photographs.

Accession 17.008 consists of one presentation by a member of the Congress, and has been included in the internal publications series of accession 16.015.

Events and Workshops

Series 3 includes materials created or collected as part of planning, promoting, or hosting events and workshops organized by members of the Congress, including Family Violence Workshops, Festivals of Art & Culture, Cultural Awareness Workshops, conferences, and Unity Dinners. Materials include programs, guest books, event proposals, and invitations. Also included are evaluations of events, and invitations and programs for external events that were attended or participated-in by members of the Congress.

A member of the Congress was part of researching and curating a 1996 exhibit at the Manitoba Museum called Back Tracks to Railway Ties, and the transcripts of oral history interviews conducted as part of the project and other related materials are also included in this series.

Electronic Records

Series 8 consists of CDs and DVDs. Discs mainly contain photos and recordings of proceedings taken at events sponsored by the Congress or attended by its members. Other files include PowerPoint presentations, posters and other promotional materials, sound recordings, and meeting minutes.

Correspondence

Series 2 consists of both incoming and outgoing correspondence regarding events, workshops, multicultural initiatives, and other topics or events in which members of the Congress were interested or involved. Also included in this series are invitations, greeting cards, memos between organizations or members of the Congress, nominations, letters of support and thanks, and other materials related to correspondence such as reports, presentations, information about meetings, funding information, program proposals, surveys, budget info, and programs and brochures.

Photographs

Photographs in this series depict members and events of the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba, as well as members of the community with whom the Congress interacted. Photographs are from events hosted or attended by the Congress or its members, including meetings, workshops, brunches and luncheons, Kwanzaa and Christmas celebrations, Unity Dinners and dances, 25th Anniversary celebrations, national and local conferences, the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba Pioneer Gala, the Y.M.C.A Women of Distinction Award Gala, and other events and gatherings.

Grant Applications

Series 4 includes grant applications prepared by the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba to the Ethnocultural Community Support Program, Community Mobilization Program, and New Horizons. Also included are program proposals and materials containing financial information.

Photographs

Series 10 contains photographs that depict members and events of the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba, as well as members of the community with whom the Congress interacted. Photographs are from events hosted or attended by the Congress or its members, including Unity Dinners and dances, workshops, Kwanzaa celebrations, Birthday parties, Lodge Teas, and other events and gatherings.
