Biographical history

The McHaffie family moved to Swan River, MB from Souris in 1901, having prior lived in Ontario. At that time they were members of the Methodist Church. All four of their children attended Wesley College. Ilo "Mac" McHaffie attended Wesley College in the years 1916-1920. Outside of her studies, she involved herself with drama and sports, particularly hockey and basketball, and in her graduating year was elected Lady Stick of her class. After graduation, McHaffie taught at Clandeboye, Winnipeg Beach, and Pierson. In 1925 she married Mr. McDonald and settled in Clandeboye.

Custodial history

The photographs were donated to the University of Winnipeg in 1997 by Ilo McHaffie's daughter, Mary J. McDonald. Prior to 1997, the photographs were kept by Ilo McHaffie's family. They were processed and catalogued in 2011.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of personal photographs, with some enlarged professional prints, mostly from Ilo McHaffie's time as a student at Wesley College, 1916-1920. The images primarily depict campus life: sports, drama, dining, student residence, and fashion. Some images show McHaffie's friends and family at such occasions as graduation, wedding, military service, or travel. While most of the images are from Wesley Hall, Sparling Hall, 288 Broadway, or other Winnipeg locales, other identified locations include Penticton, BC; Regina, SK; Swan River, MB; French River, MB; and Ottawa, ON. The fonds is arranged into four series: enlarged prints and three albums, from which the photographs were removed and rehoused where possible.
