Biographical history

A lack of biographical information in the donor records means that information concerning the subjects of these photographs and their donor can only be discerned from the captions which are written on the backs of most of the photographs. From these captions it can be inferred that Hilda Tofts lived as a child in Rivers, Manitoba. Her family seems to have had some connection with Southport, England as two photographs were taken there. Between 1912 and 1913, Hilda's family moved to Transcona (possibly to 95 Winona Street) where Hilda attended St. George's Sunday School. Identified subjects of these photographs include Edward and Lawrence Tofts, who are possibly Hilda's brothers, and Frances Williams, who is possibly Hilda's sister. Also featured in one of the photographs is Madalyne Brinston of Transcona, ca.1916, who later married Percy Van Slyck and who has also donated photographs to this museum. Madalyne and Hilda appear to be the same age, about 16, at the time. Hilda appears in another photograph of two couples at a beach, ca.1916 - 1920.

Custodial history

These photographs were donated to the Museum by Hilda Havelock in 1990.

Scope and content

The collection consists of three cartes de visites, one postcard portrait and 21 snapshots of various sizes. The cartes are the oldest photographs in this collection. Only one features identified subjects, a woman and infant identified in a caption verso as Mary Ann Westwood (nee Wisby) and her baby Claude in 1861. Three of the snapshots show Hilda with her school friends, first at Rivers School , ca. 1910, and at St. George's, ca.1913. The other snapshots feature Hilda and/or people who are likely her family and friends, ca.1908 - 1930. The one colour snapshot features an older woman identified in a caption verso as Hilda H., ca.1979.
