Biographical history
Harold Buchwald was a lawyer and philanthropist from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1993.
Harold Buchwald was born in Winnipeg in 1928. He graduated finished his law degree at the University of Manitoba in 1952 and was called to the Bar the same year. With Yude Henteleff, he founded the firm of Buchwald and Yenteleff in 1965; the firm would later become Pitblado LLC. He was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1966 and served as the President of the Manitoba Bar Association and the Law Society of Manitoba. In 1994 he was awarded an honourary LLD from the University of Manitoba.
Buchwald chaired a number of royal commissions on tax reform.
During his time at the University of Manitoba he was the editor of The Manitoba, the university’s student newspaper. He later wrote columns for the Jewish Post and News and the Winnipeg Free Press.
Buchwald supported the arts and culture community in Winnipeg in a number of capacities. This included serving as executive director of Arts Stabilization Manitoba Inc. and as Director Emeritus of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He was also a Board Member of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
The many awards received by Buchwald include the Order of Canada in 1993 and a member of the Winnipeg Citizens’ Hall of fame in 2011.
He married Dee Besbeck with whom he had two children. Buchwald died in Winnipeg in 2008.

Fonds consists of records about Harold Buchwald as well as material created by Buchwald in cooperation with the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada.
Records include audio and video recordings of interviews of, and presentations given by Harold Buchwald about the Jews of Winkler, Manitoba and Israel. Also includes text of interviews and presentations.
