Biographical history
Griswold Presbyterian Church existed in the Manitoba community of Griswold, west of Brandon in the Rural Municipality of Sifton, from 1898 to 1919. A Mr. Hardy held the first religious service in the area in the spring of 1882, one year after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Before the town was built, the Presbyterians held regular services in tents. By 1883, the home of Robert Sutherland was being used for services. Eventually a hall was moved into the new town of Griswold and became the location for both the Methodist and Presbyterian services. In 1892, the charge included Griswold, Hillsdale, Oak Lake and Sandhurst. That same year, Lot 16 and 17 on Block 4 of Patterson was bought from Mr. Richard B. Angus for a church. The church, built by stonemason Henry Winter, did not officially open until December 11, 1898. Griswold was considered a mission field until 1919 when it became a three point congregation with Monteith and Huntingdon. Griswold Methodist and Griswold Presbyterian Church formed a Local Union on November 15, 1919 to become Griswold Union Church. The Presbyterian church continued to be used as the Union church, and the Methodist minister, Rev. John Ridd, continued to serve the Union congregation. In 1925, Griswold Union Church officially joined The United Church of Canada to become Griswold United Church.
