History

The original owner of this collection is said to have been Mrs. Joey Braiden of Oshawa. Notes in the donor file suggest that Mrs. Braiden may have had a connection with the Petrie family, who are described as managing the St. James Hotel; and the Mathesons, who were one of the earliest families to settle in the Red River district. Certainly the photographer's imprints, which include several Winnipeg studios as well as several Scottish photographers, suggest that the photographs were owned by a family of Scottish background living in Winnipeg during the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
