Administrative history
Grace United Church existed in Winnipeg from 1925 until 1955. The predecessor of Grace United Church was Grace Methodist Church (c.1871). When Grace Methodist Church joined the United Church of Canada in 1925, it carried with it a significant debt. The land that Grace Methodist Church had purchased in 1913, in order to build a new church, became a heavy financial burden when the original land and church property at Notre Dame and Ellice could not be sold. Some relief came to the congregation of Grace United in 1929, when trustees took responsibility for the finances of the church. However, in 1948 the trustees of Grace United handed the property over to Winnipeg Presbytery and it was listed for sale. Winnipeg Presbytery decided that only 50% of the profits from the sale of the church would be passed on to the congregation for the purposes of reestablishing themselves at a new location. The congregation of Grace United Church chose to dissolve in 1955. The proceeds from the sale of the church were put into the Grace Church Trust Fund to be used for Church Extension by Winnipeg Presbytery. Upon dissolution, several of the members of the Grace congregation joined St. Stephen's-Broadway United Church.
