Name of creator
The General Missionary registers record baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials performed outside of normal parish locations. The first register for example, records these events which took place at the Immigration Hall in Winnipeg, at the Royal Alexandra Hotel (CPR Station Hotel), in private homes and at other public locations in the city. Missionaries were sent out fom the Synod office to baptise, marry and bury throughout the Diocese. Some of these records are for locations in other dioceses. It is apparent from one notebook, which was formerly listed as Register No 5 was actually the "rough" copy of the priest concerned and the entries for this book were then made in the Synod Registers at a later date. Further research is ongoing to establish the provenance of the general missionary.
Synod office to archives. Originally recorded as DRL-84-64. It is possible that a quick perusal of contents accounts for the use of the term "interlake" in the original title but further research indicates that the range of locations was much broader and included the city of Winnipeg.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of eight registers recording services throughout Manitoba by general missionaries. There are two minute and record books which are placed with the Parish Registers because they also record baptisms. One "register" is actually a rough copy of events to be recorded and contains no signatures, and along with ephemera removed from the registers, it has been placed in the single file folder.
Immediate source of acquisition
General Missionary is not a parish and there are no parish records other than sacramental registers. A complete list of the 130 places where services took place is appended to the finding aid.
