Biographical history

Ethel Johns was born in England. She graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1902 and did postgraduate work at Teachers’ College and Columbia University in New York. She became superintendent at McKellar General Hospital, Fort William, Ontario, and later at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. In 1919 she was appointed director of the department of nursing at the University of BC. In 1925 she became a field director with the Paris office of the Rockefeller Foundation and assisted in development of schools of nursing and nursery services in Hungary and Romania. In 1933 she became editor of The Canadian Nurse and held this position until her retirement in 1944. On retirement she received a doctor of law degree from Mt. Allison University and the Mary Agnes Snively Award in recognition of her international nursing services.
