Biographical history

Erdman Schellenberg (popularly known as Ed Schellenberg) (1928-2012) was born in the R.M. of Montcalm, Manitoba as the fourth of six children born to David Schellenberg (1898-1965) and Anna Braun (1901-1997). He married Romelda Rempel in 1951 in the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church (EMB) in Steinbach, Manitoba. They had four children. Ed was a long-time resident of Steinbach, owned and operated Schellenberg Sales and Services, served as a volunteer in various community organizations, and during his retirement years, spend many hours collecting, compiling and researching Mennonite genealogy and family history. He died in Steinbach on 13 April 2012 and is buried in the Heritage Cemetery in Steinbach.

Custodial history

The materials in this fonds/collection were retrieved from Ed Schellenberg's home at 206-1st Street in Steinbach on July 25-26, 2012, shortly before the house was being presented for-sale. Daughter Colleen Koop faciliated the transfer on behalf of her mother, Romelda, Ed's widow.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of family documents, unpublished genealogies, a computer database and 83 photographs. Many of the genealogies are computer generated reports based on data that Ed Schellenberg collected and compiled for himself and others interested in Mennonite family history. Some of surnames of the families he researched included Schellenberg, Rempel, Braun, Barkman, Falk, Schlabach, Warkentin and Reimer.
