Biographical history
The donor of this collection, Elspeth (Cameron) Newton, numbers many well known citizens of Winnipeg among her family. Her great-grandfather was the Hon. William Hespeler who came west as Dominion Immigration agent and who brought the first Mennonite settlers to Manitoba. He later served as speaker of the Manitoba legislature for four sessions after being elected as MLA for Rosenfeld in 1899. He also served as German consul for Manitoba and the North-west Territories for many years. William's mother, the former Anna Barbara Andrassy, had been a lady-in-waiting to the Grand-Duchess of Baden, where William was born. In 1886 William's daughter, Georgina Hope Hespeler, married the well-known Winnipeg real estate entrepreneur and banker, Augustus Meredith Nanton. Tragically, Georgina died 3 weeks after the birth of their daughter (the donor's mother) Mary Georgina in 1887. The donor's father, Douglas Lorne Cameron, was the son of Sir Douglas Cameron who had made his fortune in lumber and milling after coming west in 1880 and was appointed lieutenant-governor of Manitoba in 1911. The wedding of the donor's parents on September 6, 1912 was attended by by many of Winnipeg's business and social elite. Photographs of the wedding party were taken at the famous home of the bride's father (Kilmorie) at 229 Roslyn Road which was demolished in the mid 1930s.
