Biographical history

Eleanor M. Blain was a graduate student (Linguistics) at the University of Manitoba. She graduated with a Masters degree in 1989. While working on her thesis, The Bungee dialect of the Red River Settlement, she conducted an oral history project whereby she recorded people using the Bungee dialect.

Biographical history

Frank J. Walters was born ca. late-1890s in Winnipeg. As a boy, Walters pumped a church organ on Sundays for a quarter. As a young man, Walters drove the night taxi for free. His recollections about life in the Red River Settlement are compiled in a manuscript he wrote and edited titled Pieces of the Past: A Collection of Tales of Old Red River.

Custodial history

The fonds was donated by Eleanor M. Blain to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in 1989.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Frank Walters' collection of Lower Red River oral histories (12 audio reels and 13 audio-cassettes transcribed by Eleanor M. Blain) and Eleanor Blain's collection of Bungee dialect recordings (9 audio cassettes - 7 original recordings, 2 copies).
