Administrative history
The first Fashion Review took place on 3rd June, 1953 as a project of the Dugald Women's Institute as a Rally Entertainment presented to their Sister Institute. By 1955/56 shows were booked two years ahead with a show nearly every week during the winter. These 'fashion reviews' became tremendously popular, requiring an almost full-time commitment by fashion review members and it was decided to create the Dugald Ladies Fashion Review as a completely separate entity in 1959. The new group was called the Dugald Ladies Fashion Review. Members contributed their share of Fashion Review proceeds to their church or another charity of their choice. About one half of the Fashion Review members continued to be members of the Women's Institute. Many people who enjoyed the review were moved to donate clothing and accessories for what they saw as a useful and entertaining purpose and it soon became apparent that a collection of some significance was being created. Members of the Fashion Review decided to move to incorporate their collection of historic costumes in March of 1977 and to secure charitable status in anticipation of construction of a storage space to house the their collection. From that point on the proceeds of the Fashion Review presentations were designated towards the support of the museum project. Initially officers of the Dugald Ladies Fashion Review included a Director, Corresponding Secretary/ Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and Commentator. The Commentator for many years was Edna Holland, with Winnifred Van Slyck serving as Coordinator. Pianists included Dorothy Norman, Arleen Christopherson and Dorothy Lowe.
Custodial history
The records of the Dugald Ladies Fashion Review remained in the custody of the officers of the Fashion Review, principally the Corresponding Secretary, until the Dugald Costume Museum building was opened in 1983. After that date some records were housed on the premises with inactive records being moved to storage on site. Some records remained in the custody of Fashion Review members and were brought to the Museum in the late 1990s. A number of items including historical materials and newspaper clippings were received by the Museum directly from Edna Holland, long-time Fashion Review commentator. Other records collected by Edna Holland, including scrapbooks and correspondence, were donated by the family of Edna Holland after her death.
Scope and content
Records date from 1953, when the first review took place to 1998 and include minutes and other administrative records as well as records documenting shows and reviews. Also found here is documentation of clothing donations made to the review and records pertaining to the manufacture of reproductions for wear by review participants.
