Biographical history

Dr C Stuart Houston is a prominent figure in the political, medical and natural history societies of Saskatchewan. The foreward by the Honorable Sylvia O Fedoruk, OC,SOM,DSTJ,BA,MA, DSC, LLD, DHUML, FCCPM, to one of the books "Steps on the Road to Medicare: Why Saskatchewan Led the Way" states: "Stuart himself is truly a part of Saskatchewan history. He served on the executive of the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine from 1979 to 1987, including two years as president. His published works in medicine and the history of medicine number 268, including three books, thirteen chapters in books (among these three chapters in Pediatric Skeletal Radiology, 1991), and sixty-five original scientific articles. His published works in ornithology and natural history number 532 including four books, thirty chapters in books, and 244 original papers. his interest in ornithology is legendary, especially in bird-banding - he and his wife, Mary, have banded over 120,000 birds of 205 species, with 3,100 recoveries. Stuart is professor emeritus of medical imaging at the University of Saskatchewan. Our paths have intertwined over many years. We both took our schooling in the Yorkton area of Saskatchewan in the 1940s. For about twenty years, until my retirement in 1986, Stuart and I collaborated in teaching radiation physics, the "Stuart and Sylvia show", to first-year medical students at the University of Saskatchewan. When I was chancellor, it was my privilege to present him with a DLITT debree (1997), though he had taken no classes and written no exams. Most of the medical students appreciated him - he is the only medical doctor to be elected honourary president of the Student Medical Society three times, including his last full year of teaching and practice. Stuart received Saskatchewan's highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, in 1992, and was made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1993. In 1997, he was the fourth recipient of the Gold Medal from the Canadian Association of Radiologists. His most recent honourary degree was a CDnL in 2002."
