Alexander Fleming was born in Lanark, Scotland in 1841 and studied at both the Glasgow University School of Medicine and Harvard University. He moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1863 and practiced medicine in Sackville for 10 years. In 1881, Fleming moved his family to Brandon, Manitoba where he became the city's first medical doctor and pharmacist. In addition to practicing medicine, he served as Brandon School Board's first chair in 1881, President of the Manitoba and Northwest Farmers' Union, and member of the Provisional Board of Management for Brandon General Hospital in 1883. He became a staff member of the hospital when it opened in 1891. Fleming died in 1897 and is commemorated by Fleming School in Brandon.
