Biographical history
Dr. Albert Henry Stewart Gillson was born in England and educated at Cambridge University. He had an academic career in mathematical physics and taught and served as vice principal of Dawson College at McGiill University in Montreal before serving as the President of the University of Manitoba from 1948 to 1954. He was also the national chairman of the Federation of Canadian Artists and president of the Canadian Arts Council. He was the first President of the Winnipeg Ballet Board of Directors from 1949 to 1950, and remained on the Board as Honorary President until his death in 1954.

The records of Dr. A.H.S. Gillson came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet archives as part of a transfer of records from the RWB.
