Administrative history

During the 1960s the White Cross Guild hired a Director of Volunteer Services and established a volunteer department. This department became a department of the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1970.

The Volunteer Departments at Winnipeg General Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg and Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital – D.A. Stewart Centre remained as separate entities for a few years after the 1973 amalgamation but in 1977 the department of Volunteer Services was formed at Health Sciences Centre.

Voluntarism at Health Sciences Centre grew in the mid 1980s and as a result there was a need for a redefinition of the structure. This began in 1988 when the department and the White Cross guild roles were defined. Volunteer Enterprises at HSC was incorporated in 1990. By the early 1990s the Volunteer Department, Volunteer Organizations (White Cross Guild, Peter Pan Club, Guild’s of Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Book Market) and Volunteer Enterprises all reported to the Director of Volunteer Services.
