Biographical history

David Anderson was born February 10,1814 in London England.He was the eldest son of Archibald Anderson, an assistant surgeon with the Bengal army, who was killed during a war with the Pindarries when David was four years old. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, graduating in 1836. David Anderson was ordained Deacon on April 23, 1837 and Priest on July 8 of that same year. He was consecrated in 1849 as first Bishop of Rupert's Land. Upon arrival in Rupert's Land, he took charge of the Red River Academy, founded by John Macallum, and later renamed it St. John's Collegiate School. Bishop Anderson also began St. John's College as a theological school, giving it the motto: "In Thy light shall we see light." He resigned in 1865 and returned to England, where he accepted the living of St. Andrew's, Clifton as well as the position of Chancellor of St. Paul's Cathedral in London until he retired in 1881. David Anderson died November 5, 1885.
