History

The house occupied by Daly House Museum at 122-118th St. in Brandon, Manitoba was built in 1882 for Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly (1852-1911). In 1896, Daly sold the house to his law partner, George Robson Coldwell (1858-1924). The Coldwell family resided there until 1928. From 1930 until 1972, the house served as a children's shelter, called The Maples. In 1976, Brandon Museum Inc., a non-profit organization, took over the building, restored it, and converted it into Daly House Museum, which opened in 1978. Its preservation was largely due to the efforts of Stephen Magnacca, Mayor of Brandon from 1961 to 1969. Named after him, the Magnacca Research Centre on the museum's third floor houses archival records that illustrate the growth and development of Brandon and surrounding area, both before and after the city's incorporation in 1882. The Centre provides reference services to individuals, organizations, and other interested groups. Brandon Museum Inc. continues to operate Daly House Museum.
