Esme Crampton was born in England and brought experience in acting, ballet and stage management when she arrived in Canada in 1954. She spent two years serving as a voice coach with the Stratford Festival in Ontario, during which time she also opened the Speech and Drama Centre in Toronto. She became the first director of the Manitoba Theatre School in 1960 and taught classes at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She returned to the stage to perform at the Vancouver International Festival in 1962. She was a voice coach at the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama at the University of Toronto, where she was also the speech consultant for the Department of Education for twenty-two years, which for ten years included the position of senior tutor. Her writings include A Handbook of the Canadian Theatre written in 1964 and Next Class, Please, a biography of Gweneth Lloyd that was used for a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) television documentary in 1979. Esme Crampton passed away on March 26, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario.
