Biographical history

(1889-1969). Born in Bournemouth, England, served in the Royal Navy as engineer apprentice, came to Winnipeg in 1913 and enrolled in St. John's College with a view to obtaining a degree in Arts prior to entering the ministry. Served in the Field Ambulance Corps between 1914 and 1918. Obtained BA. from St. John's College, Winnipeg and MA. from Columbia University, New York, concurrently with teaching school at Earl Grey Junior High School, Winnipeg, between [1919]-1947. He became interested in the archives of the Ecclesiastical Province and Diocese of Rupert's Land and was active in gathering material and working in association with The Rev. TCB Boon, then provincial archivist. A particular interest was the life and work of Archdeacon Robert McDonald, whose biography he worked on but was unable to complete due to ill health.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of author's notes in preparation for Best's book about Robert McDonald, transcripts of McDonald's journals and photographs. There is one file pertaining to St John's Cathedral Boys' School
