Biographical history

Christiane Pflug (née Shüt) was born in Berlin, Germany in 1936. Her father died when she was four and her mother became a nurse during the war years. At the age of seven she moved to Austria to escape bombing in Berlin. After the war she rejoined her mother in Frankfurt. Her family immigrated to Canada and Christiane went to Paris to study fashion design. She met her husband Michael Pflug in Europe. With no formal training she began painting with support from her husband and other artists. Christiane lived in Tunis between the years 1957-1959, where her two daughters were born. She returned to Canada and moved to Toronto where she continued painting until she died from an overdose in 1972.
