Administrative history

In 1936, a group of teenage girls formed a guild, Junior St. Agnes, led by Jessamine Godfrey. Their purpose was to assist the St. Agnes Guild during projects such as rummage and at the canteen during races at Polo Park. In time, they expanded and began initiating their own projects.
By 1950, thirty active members staffing the canteen in the old Children’s Hospital on Redwood and Main street . In 1958, the name was changed to the Chown Guild in recognition of medical contributions made by the Late Dr. H. H. Chown, the late Dr. Gordon Chown, Dr. Bruce Chown.
Throughout time, members have organized various fundraising projects such as teas, flea markets, fashion shows, wine and cheese parties and charity balls. Members were also active volunteers within in the Hospital. Furthermore, by 1972, the Guild had become involved in a slide/tape presentation on Poison Prevention in order to educate the public on hazardous household poisonous products.
In 2010, the five Guild of the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg – St. Agnes, St. John’s, Annie A. Bond, McKinnon, and Chown, amalgamated to from the Children’s Hospital Guild of Manitoba.

Series was received from the Chown Guild via Marie-Alice Grassick and Barb McLean.

Scope and content

Sous-fonds consists of meeting minutes, Annual Meeting reports, president's remarks, fundraising event reports, by-laws, financial statements, receipts, annual financial reports, fundraising events material, donation records, general event records, correspondence between Guild members and external contacts, photographs, invitations for anniversaries, anniversary planning material, Guild's history, and material pertaining to operations of the Guild.
