Administrative history

CHO!CES, a social justice coaltion, was established in Winnipeg in 1990 and included individual members and representatives of local and provincial organizations including the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Manitoba Federation of Labour and the Manitoba Action Committee for the Status of Women. The coalition was involved in a series of public activities including Thin Ice, which opposed government support for the Winnipeg Jets hockey team and Project Loophole, which sought to overturn a Revenue Canada tax decision that benefitted a wealthy Canadian family. In addition the coalition initiated 'Alternative Budgets', promoting taxation and expenditure policies in opposition to the 'corporate' budgets proposed by federal, provincial and municipal governments. The coalition disbanded following completion of its appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in the Project Loophole case.
