History

Benjamin Wilson Caldwell (1881-1968) was Mayor of Carberry, Manitoba in 1918 and 1945-1947. He married Irene Garland in 1909 and they had daughters Olive and Doris. Caldwell was born in Huron County, Ontario to Sarah and William J. Caldwell of Ireland and he died in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1903 he moved from Port Arthur, Ontario to Broadview, Manitoba obtaining a clerkship in a general store. He later came to Carberry to work for W. G. Murphy. Caldwell had attended school until age eighteen and worked on the family farm before deciding on a commercial career. In Carberry he was a salesman for T. R. Brough, later becoming a partner with the store's new owner R. J. Hopper. He subsequently owned the store, taking Wright Garland into partnership in 1911. Caldwell was Town Councillor in 1914-1917 and again in 1949-1950. He belonged to the local Masonic Lodge and the Carberry Board of Trade.
