Administrative history

The Brotherhood of the Maintenance of Way Employees was founded at Demopolis, Alabama, in 1887, as a union representing the workers who build and maintain railway tracks, bridges and buildings on railroads. The Brotherhood emerged as a need to provide better working conditions, fair wages and benefits, and ensure these rights of the employees. This was once an International union with over 350,000 members in the United States and Canada. Brotherhood of the Maintenance of Way Employees No. 1801 was a Hudson Bay Railway employee union out of Setting Lake Lodge No. 1801 situated at Wabowden, chartered in 1935.
