Biographical history

Birch River United Church has existed in the Manitoba community of Birch River, located north of Swan River, since 1925. Its predecessor was Birch River Methodsit Church which was established as a mission in 1914. Services were held in private homes and in the community until the first church was built in 1928. In 1925, the Birch River Pastoral charge included congregations at Drury and Steele. A new foundation for the church was constructed in 1937, during which time services were held in the local school. It was replaced by another church that was dedicated on April 21, 1964. A fire on March 10, 1991 resulted in extensive damage in the church. Damaged portions were repaired or replaced and the church was re-dedicated in October of 1991. At the time of description, Birch River United Church is part of the Hillsview Pastoral charge, along with Bowsman United Church and Knox United Church, Minitonas in Northland Presbytery.
