Notice biographique

Beverly (Bev) Ridd (nee Tozer) was born in Winnipeg and educated in both Winnipeg and Sioux Lookout, Ontario. She graduated from United College Collegiate in 1948. In 1952, she graduated from the Winnipeg Children's Hospital Nursing program, winning the General Proficiency award. She married Dr. Carl Ridd in 1952 and together they had three children: Laurel, Brian, and Karen. The family lived in Winnipeg, MB (1952-1958); Emerson, MB (1958-1963); New Jersey (1963-1966); and permanently settled in Winnipeg after 1966. Ridd worked as a Registered Nurse and Instructor of Nursing Arts at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital, a Pediatric Nurse for Dr. Harry Medovoy, the Co-ordinator of the River Heights Family Life Education Centre, and the Co-ordinator of the Referral Agent Program of the United Way of Winnipeg. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg and won the Gold Medal for English (General Course) in 1989.

Ridd is one of the founders of Project Peacemakers, a group established in Winnipeg in 1983 to address peace and justice from the position of faith organizations. This organization campaigned for stricter advertising rules and age restrictions on violent games in Manitoba. She was also active with Aurora Musicale, serving as its President from 1986-1988; Augustine United Church, including the Communications Committee, the Visioning Committee and the Choir; Peace Brigades International as the Manitoba representative; Building Peace Through Play; YWCA Public Affairs/Social Action Committee; Westworth United Church Adult Education Committee; Winnipeg School Division Volunteer Program; United Church of Canada Human Sexuality Resource team; Networking for Needs as Program Chair; and Chair of the Lady Wesmen Classic Basketball Tournament from 1981 to 1984.

Her involvement in the United Church led to her appointment as a Church representative on the University of Winnipeg Board of Regents, the university's highest governing body. She served on the Board for six years (1989-1995) where she also served as a member of the Student Affairs Committee, the Multicultural Resources Centre Board, the Nominating Committee, the German-Canadian Chair Advisory Board, the External Relations Committee, and the University Affairs Committee, the latter of which she also served a term as Vice-Chair.
